THE ceremony to unveil a new plaque on the war memorial in Cardigan to honour those from the town lost in recent conflicts played a big part in the decision of the Welsh Guards to hold a ceremony and parade in the town.

The Guards have been awarded the freedom of Ceredigion and will hold a special ceremony and parade through Cardigan on June 24.

Cllr Catrin Miles told the January meeting of the town council that the special commemoration service held last year for Lee Davies and Dave Greenhalgh, who died in Afghanistan, and Michael Dunphy, who died in the Falklands War, had played a big part in that decision.

“It was a well organised ceremony and the response on the day was very special and that has made them look favourably on carrying out the ceremony in Cardigan,” said Cllr Miles.
