Pembroke's last bank is due to close in the summer, HSBC has announced today.

Pembroke is one of 27 branches HSBC is set to close by the end of this year, with the Pembroke branch closing on July 31.

The bank has said that jobs may be at risk due to the closure.

HSBC was the last bank that retained a presence in Pembroke, with Barclays and Santander closing branches in the town in 2019.

Aaron Carey, county councillor for Pembroke St Mary south ward, spoke of his disappointment at the plans, calling it short-sighted.

"This is another blow for Pembroke," he said.

"No banks will be left at all for those who still want or need the personal touch or some elderly or other vulnerable people who need help.

"This is very short-sighted and shows no thanks or consideration to the years of loyalty from the town.

"People are trying hard to bring the Main Street back to life and blows like this only serve to increase the bloated pockets of the banks.

"I have written to HSBC to express my disappointment with this news as well as them going back on their claim that they would give two years notice if it did happen."
