MOVES are under way to get hold of £4.7 million to improve routes for cyclists and pedestrians.

West Sussex County Council’s bid for the Department for Transport funding was submitted on Friday and includes plans for paths and cycleways from New Findon Valley to Findon Village and Littlehampton to Rustington.

Some existing cycle lanes will also have improvements and the council hopes to support the reopening of schools with measures including bicycle training for Year 6 children who have missed out under lockdown.

Councillor Roger Elkins said: “We want to create an environment that’s safer for both cyclists and pedestrians to help nurture a culture of active travel choice.

“This would support health, improve air quality, address climate change issues, help manage traffic congestion and reduce reliance on the car.”
