It has been revealed that there will be no free-to-air live coverage of Wales' autumn rugby internationals this year.

Welsh rugby fans will be expected to subscribe to Amazon Prime to watch the games in October and November live.

S4C had been in discussions with main rights holders Amazon Prime to show the matches in Welsh - as they did in autumn 2020.

But it will only show highlights of the games against New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji and Australia an hour after the final whistle.

Prime, who also have rights to England, Scotland, France and Italy’s Tests, previously allowed Wales’ matches to be shown on S4C.

S4C will show up to 40 minutes of match highlights from the four Tests, according to S4C sports commissioner Sue Butler.

“We are the only free-to-air broadcaster with extended same day highlights of every Wales game in the Autumn Nations Series," she said.

"We’ll be on the air an hour after the final whistle of the matches with all the action and reaction,” said S4C sports commissioner Sue Butler.

Amazon Prime have said they will provide their own Welsh-language commentary this year, rather than allowing games to be screened live on S4C.

Alex Green, managing director of Prime Video Sport Europe. said: “We are always looking to offer more choice to Prime members.

"It was important for us to deliver a Welsh-language feed for the Autumn Nations Series

“This additional viewing experience will bring our world-class production to Welsh language households across the UK, whether they are watching live, catching up on-demand or viewing the highlights on S4C.”

Wales will welcome back Southern Hemisphere teams to the Principality Stadium for autumn internationals for the first time since 2018.

That was followed by the World Cup in 2019 and a Covid-affected 2020 series, in which New Zealand, South Africa and Australia did not enter.

Wales' fixtures and kick-off times are:

Wales v New Zealand, Saturday 30 October, 17:15

Wales v South Africa, Saturday 6 November, 17:30

Wales v Fiji, Sunday 14 November, 15:15

Wales v Australia, Saturday 20 November, 17:30

The S4C presentation team will be led by Sarra Elgan, with Gareth Charles commentating and Rhodri Gomer as pitch-side reporter.
