IT’S the sports and craft beer pub which attracts a theatrical crowd along with lots of football fans.

The Mayflower Village is on Commercial Road, right next to the South Coast’s biggest theatre and just a few minutes walk from Southampton Central.

It offers interactive darts, a shuffle board, table tennis and foosball tables in its basement bar, which go down a storm with customers of all ages.

That and the proximity to Mayflower Theatre, the train station and student halls of residence means an eclectic mix of clientele, as general manager of three years Steve Carthy explains.

“I think my most memorable moment at the pub was when customers going to see Mamma Mia sang along with Saints home and away supporters also in the pub!

“It was a great atmosphere and fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves.”

Daily Echo:

The bar has had several reincarnations over the years and is now run by Urban Village Pubs.

The modern venue serves a good variety of food like burgers and pizzas, including the Absolute Quacker duck pizza, a firm favourite, as well as pub classics like scampi and fish and chips.

The craft beer range is popular at The Mayflower Village, as are the great array of lagers and wines.

Daily Echo:

A new outside drinking area has been installed on the pavement in front of the pub, sectioned off by screens with plants.

The pub televises all matches and events available on its BT Sports subscription.

Steve added: “The best thing about running a pub is the social side and helping people to enjoy themselves and have a good time, which is evidenced by out TripAdvisor and Google reviews.

Daily Echo:

“Creating a vibrant and engaged team is very rewarding too.

“We’re known for being the theatre pub and giving a great welcome and service, as well as looking after our customers and team.

"The pandemic was a huge challenge as this affected not just us but the theatre next door. Our company acted quickly to enable us to trade as effectively as possible. Since Covid, we have adapted by introducing a revised app, delivery app partners and ensuring that our team are looked after not just financially but with emotional support too. The old cliche that we are a family not just a team is very true here at The Mayflower Village."
