The county’s “best kept secret” is about to be revealed as a fishing club shows what it has to offer at a Fish Week open day.

The members at Wolfsdale Pitt Coarse Fishery have spent five years improving and stocking a three-quarter acre pond with a host of different fish. They are now hoping that more members and groups will take up their rods and will be bitten by the fishing bug.

The secluded pond, near Haverfordwest, also welcomes disabled anglers with four of its 25 fishing pegs or fishing stations suitable for wheelchairs.

Club chairman Peter Jordan said: “It’s Pembrokeshire’s best kept secret. We have got all the gear here, when people come we can help them out with any kit.

“There are 25 in the fishing club at the moment, it’s nice being that small, this pond doesn’t get over used but the facilities here are great. There is lots of wildlife around, always a pair of buzzards, kingfishers, jays, dragonflies. If you walk around there are thousands of frogs and newts.

“It’s something we wanted to do as a club, initially we would be going off fishing at other places but it is nice to have your own pond.”

The pond has been stocked with bream, roach, rudd, tench, orf, and crucian carp with some of the bream hitting the six-pound mark.

Club members are approved by the Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches, teaching groups of scouts from around the county.

A grant from Pembrokeshire County Council’s pride system allowed a toilet block to be built, which, along with the small kitchen, means keen fishermen can spend all day at the ponds.

The open day will be held on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and again during National Fish Week on August 2nd.
