A long-serving north Pembrokeshire head teacher has handed over the reins after more than three decades at the helm.

Alun Ifans began his retirement at the end of the summer term, after 33 years as head teacher of Ysgol Casmael in Puncheston.

A school spokesman said: “Generations of pupils owe this man a great deal as he was an inspiring and vivacious teacher, creating a stimulating environment both within and outside the classroom, and no step was too great for him to take if it meant his charges would benefit.”

Mr Ifans spent his entire teaching career in Pembrokeshire, and took a keen interest in his local community.

He staged many major art exhibitions in Puncheston, and established the Oriel at the school.

Originally from Gwynedd, Mr Ifans has written and broadcasted extensively in Welsh, and has taught the language to adults both here and in North America. He also visited Lesotho, and was made a member of the Eisteddfod’s Gorsedd of Bards in 2007.

A host of friends, including past and present colleagues, gathered at the school to celebrate his retirement, and warm tributes were paid to the popular head teacher in verse, song and speech.

Deputy headteacher Elaine Phillips coordinated the event, which was attended by chaired bard Mererid Hopwood and leader of Pembrokeshire County Council Cllr John Davies.

Mr Ifans plans to spend his retirement enjoying his favourite pursuits of painting, writing, broadcasting and walking with his wife Jackie, who has also recently retired.
