Mrs F. C. Thompson

Haverfordwest

The funeral took place on April 9th of Frances Cecilia Thompson, Haven Road, Haverfordwest, who died on March 30th. She was 92.

Frances was a teacher by profession. She was born in Manchester, as was her late husband Harold. They married in 1944, leaving Manchester soon afterwards as Harold’s work in local government took them to Plymouth, Bexhill, Leeds and Cardiff prior to his appointment as clerk and treasurer of the Pembrokeshire Water Board in 1962. They were keenly involved in the Wesleyan Church, Ramblers Association, CPRW, Civic Society, Friends of the Museum and National Park.

The committal at Parc Gwyn was followed by a service of thanksgiving at Albany Church. Officiating at Parc Gwyn were Rev Alan Jenkins and Rev David Legge (Frances’ nephew by marriage). Officiating at the service at Albany Church were Rev David Hawkes and Rev Linda Woollacott.

The principal mourners were: Martin (son); Catherine and Michael (daughter and son-in-law); Ceri, Andrew, Martin, Paul, Philip and Ruth (grandchildren); Lucy, Paul and Lucy (partners of grandchildren); Joyce Thompson (sister-in-law); Frank and Celia Thompson (brother and sister-in-law); Patricia and David Legge (niece and husband); Ian and Diane Blakeley (cousin and wife).

Unable to attend were Emma (granddaughter) and Vera (sister-in-law).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr W. M. Harries

Haverfordwest

The funeral took place on April 8th of William Mansel Harries, of City Road, Haverfordwest. He was 82.

The service, followed by interment, was held at Wolfsdale United Reformed Chapel.

The son of the late William and Alice Harries, Mansel was born at Glenover, Haverfordwest, and grew up in the Rudbaxton area before moving to Haverfordwest after his marriage in 1953. His wife Brenda, predeceased him in 2001.

Having been raised on a farm, he spent most of his working life in agriculture, being employed by Green’s Agricultural for more than 40 years. Prior to his retirement at the end of 1992, he worked for seven years as a supervisor for the National Trust.

He enjoyed an active life until a few weeks before his death on March 26th.

Mansel’s popularity was evident by the large number of mourners in attendance. Rev Martin Evans officiated, and a tribute was given by his son, Graham.

The principal mourners are: Graham, Nigel, Raymond and Martin (sons); Diane (daughter); Jackie, Jane and Val (daughters-in-law); Richard (son-in-law); Rebecca and Katy, Robert, Jessica, Natalie, Gabrielle, Jonathan, Neil and Ian (grandchildren); Sheila and Pauline (sisters-in-law); Vernon and Michael (brothers-in-law). Also present were many nieces and nephews.

Unable to attend were Muriel (sister), Linda and Terry (sisters-in-law).

There were family flowers only with donations in aid of Kidney Research, being sent to Peter Lewis, 3 Laburnum Grove, Haverfordwest.

MR D. M. EVANS

NARBERTH

St Andrew’s Church, Narberth, was full to capacity for the funeral of David Mansell Evans.

Known to many as Dai Honda, he died aged 61 on April 1st, following a short illness.

David was known for his abilities to repair motor engines of any shape and size.

He was the husband of Ivy, brother of Wynne, stepfather to Janet, Tracy, Norma and Andrew and a step-grandfather.

His brother, Councillor Wynne Evans, paid tribute to David at the funeral, recalling his love of Narberth and his 17-year marriage to Ivy.

The service was officiated by Rev Peter Lewis with Dr Geraint Rees at the organ and recorded music played by Colin Hallwood.

The bearers were Peter Phillips, Len Thomas, John Owen and Andrew Feetham.

Interment followed in the new cemetery in Narberth.

Donations in lieu of flowers for ward ten, Withybush Hospital, may be sent to Joss Griffiths, High Street, Narberth.

Mr D. G. George

Milton

The death of David Graham George, of Milton Meadows, Milton, occurred on March 21st at Withybush Hospital. He was 88.

Originally from Skewen, he was a woodwork, metal work and technical drawing teacher. He retired from Gordano School, Portishead, in 1987.

He served in the RAF as an aircraft fitter in the Middle East between 1941 and 1946.

He was married to Constance for 65 years.

David was an inspiration not only to his family but to everyone who met him. He was a perfectionist in everything he did.

He was a member of the Royal British Legion and Jeffreyston Church, and was the author of the book A Skewen boy looks back.

His interests included photography, boat building, canoe making, portrait painting and a keen gardener.

The principal mourners are: Constance Mary George (wife); Jennifer and Stephen (daughter and son-in-law); Nicholas, Miles, Jessica and Benjamin (grandchildren); Seran, Jacob, Marshall, Sophie, Isobel, Oliver and Evie (great grandchildren).

The funeral service was held at Jeffreyston Church, followed by interment in Jeffreyston Churchyard. It was officiated by Father Paul Davies.

The bearers were Thomas Lloyd, Paul Williams, Donald Allan, Gerald Williams, Derek Brock, Martin Hyde. The Royal British Legion standard bearer was Ashley Griffiths.

Mrs D. Hayes

Lampeter Velfrey

Doris Hayes, of Marlais View, Lampeter Velfrey, died at Withybush Hospital on March 30th. She was 79.

Originally from Splott, Cardiff, she lived in Cardiff for nearly 50 years. She was a housewife and a mother.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Eric Hayes (husband); Christine Davies, Yvonne Rees and Sue Forder (daughters); Nigel and Chris Hayes (son and daughter-in-law); Alan Davies (son-in-law); Sarah and Daniel Argent, Catherine and Bethan Hayes, Stuart Clark, Anthony Clark, Matthew Clark and Amy Rees, Gabrielle Forder (grand children); James and Sophie Clark (great grandchildren).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn and the interment of ashes was held the following day close to her mother and sister. It was officiated by Rev Elwyn John, Rev Chancellor Graham Edwards and Rev Chancellor Geoffrey Morris.

The bearers were Stuart, Daniel, Anthony and Matthew (grandsons).

Mr J. L. Mathias Merlins Bridge The death occurred of John (Leslie) Mathias, of Mill Lane, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest on March 21st. He was 80.

He worked for several years with H. F. McIntee and 13 years at Elf Oil Refinery. He retired in 1991 due to ill health.

He served two years’ national service in the Army based in Dover.

His main interests were his family, children, grandchildren and first great grandchild. He had many hobbies including cooking, baking, DIY, watching sport and his garden.

Leslie and Cicely married in 1954 and enjoyed 56 years together.

Family left to mourn are: Cicely (wife); Garry and Dawn (son and daughter-in-law); Beverley and Ian (daughter and son-in-law); Ross, Kirsty, Stacey, Hayley, Adrian, Louise and Megan (grandchildren); Nyah (great granddaughter); June, Lesley and Ann (sisters-in-law); Vincent and Cecil (brothers-in-law); Francis, Peter, Nicky and Gail (nieces and nephew).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev Martyn Evans.

Mr D. Moir Milford Haven The death of David Moir, of Grassholm Close, Milford Haven, occurred on Monday, March 29th, at Withybush Hospital. He was 66.

Dave was a native of Aberdeen and moved to Milford Haven in 1975 where he worked as a marine pilot for many years. He was a keen yachtsman and active member of Pembrokeshire Yacht Club.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn on April 6th and was officiated by Rev Martyn Evans.

Family left to mourn are: Jill (wife); Craig and Louisa, Alistair and Tracey (sons and daughters-in-law); Shaun and Jemma (stepson and daughter-in-law); Sam and Matthew (stepdaughter and son-in-law); Emma, Chris, Fin, Annie, Maddie, Tom, Gabriel, Ella and Bethan (grandchildren); and Margaret (sister).

Mr E. James

Trefin

The death occurred of Emlyn James, of Cranog Trefin, on April 4th at Withybush Hospital. He was 82.

An only child, Emlyn was born in Llanrhian and met his wife Peggy when they were both working at Trecwn. They married in 1958 and bought Cranog Trefin in 1964.

After retiring from Trecwn, Emlyn worked for Robert Thomas, in Croesgoch, and was also an insurance agent. Peggy ran a guesthouse business from Cranog for many years and was renowned for her wedding cakes.

After Peggy’s death in 2007, Emlyn decided to move to Fishguard but had only lived in his new home a few months before his death.

The funeral was held at Croesgoch Baptist Chapel on April 12th, followed by burial at Croesgoch Cemetery. The bearers at the chapel and cemetery were his nephews.

The principal mourners are: Ruthy and Ella James (cousins); Willie Bowen (brother-in-law); Betty Davies (sister-in-law); Colin and Ros Bowen, David Bowen and Janette Miles, Heather and Gary Duckenfield, Arwel and Geraldine Davies (nephews and nieces) together with great nephews, great nieces, friends and neighbours too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend were Capt Bleddyn James (cousin); Byron Davies (brother-in-law) and Joyce and Brian Snow (sister-in-law and brother-in-law) and family in Australia.

The service was officiated by Rev William Owen, assisted by Rev Jonathan Lean, Rev John Bennett and Rev Emlyn Jones. The organist was Diane Adams.

The British Legion standard bearer escorted the coffin from the chapel after the British Legion exhortation was read by Peter Davies.

Mrs R. Morris

Narberth

The death occurred on March 31st of Rhiannon Morris, of Narberth, at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen.

Originally from Clynderwen, she was a librarian in Narberth and she worked at the medical hall, Clynderwen, before retirement.

She married David Jones Morris in 1945, a pharmacist in the medical hall, Clynderwen. He predeceased her in 1968.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Sharon Morris (daughter); Menna Williams and Sian (cousin and her daughter); Gwylfa Evans, Nano and Maria (cousin, his wife and their daughter), plus friends.

The service was held at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Rev Huw George. The bearers were Paul Hay, Graham Thomas and Stuart Treharne.

St Davids

The funeral took place recently of Mabel Annie Chapman, of Fford Owen, St Davids, at the chapel of rest, St Davids. She was 85.

The service was officiated by Rev Jonathan Lean, and the bearers were Alyn Pugh, Malcolm Horsfall, Gareth John and Tony Pearce.

The principal mourners are: Maureen and Donald, Jennifer and Michael (daughters and sons-in-law); Belinda and Alan (granddaughter and husband) and Charlotte and Ashley (great grandchildren).

Mrs S. M. Wilson

Pelcomb Cross

The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 26th of Sandra Myfanwy Wilson, of Pelcomb Drive, Pelcomb Cross, Haverfordwest. She was 72.

Originally from Milford Haven, she was a contractor and a retailer.

Her main interests were the Masonic Ladies Order, reaching the honour of grand rank.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Terry Wilson (husband); Sion Wilson (son); Astrid Griffiths and Tamara Moran (daughters); Gary Phillips (brother); Natasha Moran, Roberta Snape. MR D. JAMES

LLANYCHAER

Dafydd Thomas Davies James, of Cilrhedyn Uchaf, Llanychaer, died at Withybush Hospital on March 10th after several years of ill health, aged 62.

The eldest of four children to Mair and the late Merfyn James, formerly of Broyan, Pen-y-Bryn, he lived there until his marriage to Gwennie. They made their home at Cilrhedyn Uchaf in 1967.

Dafydd farmed for most of his life, and was well known to the farming community. He enjoyed breeding horses and was very proud when Tina Youngman and Sam Bessie, his show jumper, qualified for the Horse of the Year Show.

He had many interests and enjoyed writing humorous poems for his friends and for special occasions. He was an enthusiastic fundraiser in many charity events in Llanychaer and the Gwaun Valley.

He had a wide range of friends of all ages and this was evident by the large attendance at his funeral.

The funeral took place at Glandwr Chapel, Llanychaer on March 15th. The service was led by Rev Carl Williams and Rev Don MacGregor, and the organist was Rhian Evans.

Mrs B. J. Beard

Cosheston

Berley Joyce Beard, of Cosheston, died at Withybush Hospital on March 15th, following a lengthy illness. She was 82 and had been staying at Apley Lodge Residential Home, Pembroke Dock.

During her working life she worked at Cosheston Hall as a domestic help, also doing a village postal delivery. She was also a housewife.

Her interests were reading, taking part in her husband’s Welsh Guards Society and her family.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Hugh (better known as Snowy, husband); Ashley (son); Carroll (daughter-in-law); Russell and wife Claire, Stuart and Jamie (grandsons); Lily and Niamh (great granddaughters).

The service was held at St Michael’s and All Angels Church, Cosheston followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. Rev Thelma Barber officiated.

The bearers were Ralph Kenniford, Russell Beard, Alun Davies and Emlyn Hallett.

Miss Y. Fox

Fishguard

A large gathering of family, friends, colleagues and neighbours were present on March 27th for the funeral of Yvonne Fox, who died on March 22nd at Withybush Hospital, aged 55.

A short service for the residents was held at Llain Las sheltered housing complex where Yvonne had been warden since 1987.

The service was officiated by Rev D. Carl Williams and Monsignor Clyde Hughes Johnson prior to the funeral service at St Peter’s Church, Goodwick, and interment at Llanwnda Cemetery.

The funeral service was led by Rev Brian Barnes, who was assisted by Rev Peter Mason, Rev Emlyn Jones, Canon E. Mullins, with Rev John Roberts, Rev Dr Cerwyn Davies and Rev Cen Llwyd, also in attendance.

A personal tribute was read by Hazel Kite (close family friend) and a family tribute was read by the mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Cllr Gwilym Price, who also led a tribute on behalf of the community. The organist was Mark Bushell.

Mr M. Hillmansen

Fishguard

The death of Martin Hillmansen, of Pantycelyn, Fishguard occurred at his home on March 29th. He was 62.

Martin was born in Glasgow and served his marine engineering apprenticeship with the New Zealand Shipping Company. He progressed through the ranks serving with the Denholm Shipping Company and Rowbotham’s tank ships. In 1990 he joined Stena Line, where he became a senior chief engineer.

Mr J. J. Mulcair

Pembroke Dock

The funeral took place recently of John Joseph Mulcair, of Springfield Road, Imble Lane, Pembroke Dock, who died at Singleton Hospital on March 10th.

Originally from Pembroke Dock, he served in the Army during national service at Llanion, and also worked at Ford in Dagenam, and at the Texaco refinery as a mechanical fitter.

His interests were football, bowls and horse racing and he regularly attended St Mary’s RC Church.

He was predeceased by his wife Yvonne Mulcair.

Mr W. A. Sillence

Pembroke Dock

The funeral took place recently of William Andrew Sillence, (Harry), of 13 Brewery Street, Pembroke Dock. He was 47.

After leaving college, Andrew worked for Ryan’s, Argent and most recently at Cadw where he was a stonemason for 20 years. Andrew was a keen football supporter and spent his spare time coaching Lamphey boys’ football team.

The service was led by Rev Shirley at St John’s Church, Pembroke Dock followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

The bearers were Simon Blunsden, James Probert, Dai Pannell, Martin Aries, Mark Lowndes and Lee Pitman. Corey, Connor and Martin from Lamphey boys’ football team spoke during the church service.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Gareth and Jack (sons); Pamela and Mervyn (sister and brother-in-law); and Gary, Martin, Paul, Steven and Helen (nephews and niece). The church was full to capacity with family and friends too numerous to name.

Mr E. J. Thomas

Johnston

The death of Elwyn James Thomas, of Langford Road, Johnston, occurred at Withybush Hospital on March 30th. He was 88.

He was born in Thornton and lived in Johnston for 64 years. He was a tanker driver for Celtic Oils and retired in 1987.

Elwyn’s interests were his family and gardening. He also enjoyed cycling and took part in a sponsored bike ride for guide dogs when he was 70. He also attended Thornton Baptist Chapel.

Family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Gwyneth Thomas (wife of 63 years); Allan Thomas (son); Moira Thomas (daughter-in-law); Gareth Thomas (grandson); Lexie Thomas (great granddaughter); Muriel Williams (sister), plus family and friends too numerous to mention.

Mrs C. M. Thomas

Monkton (formerly of Narberth)

The death occurred on March 25th of Catherine Martha Thomas, of Montgomery Close, Monkton, at Withybush Hospital after a short stay. She was 99.

Originally of Narberth, she was in service on many farms since leaving school, and was also a housewife and mother, bringing up five children.

Her main interests were her family and her cat. She was a great knitter, making Welsh dolls, and was a member of Monkton Church.

She was predeceased by her husband Stephen in 1962 and her eldest son Tom, who died in August.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Margaret and David (daughter and son-in-law); Terry, Michael and Anne, Roy and Mary (sons and daughters-in-law); Edith (daughter-in-law); grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren too numerous to mention.

The service took place at Monkton Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Martin Cox.

The funeral took place recently of David John Sturgess, Clouds Hill, Robeston Wathen, who died on April 8th.

He leaves to mourn: his wife Jenny; sons Paul and Mark; daughter Claire and their families.

The funeral at Parc Gwyn was officiated by Rev Elwyn John, assisted by Rev C. P. Rees. The bearers were Paul and Mark (sons); Dave (son-in-law); and Nick (nephew).
