A UNIQUE art instalment was unveiled by departing year 6 pupils at Spittal School on Friday (July 17).

The mosaic project was the idea of headteacher John Palmer who wanted to do something special involving all the children to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school.

He was put in touch with spacetocreate, a community arts organisation based in Haverfordwest which commissioned Llangwm illustrator Fran Evans and Treffynon-based mosaic artist Maddie Janes to lead the project.

Fran worked closely with the children to come up with the designs, while Maddie helped them make it into a mosaic. It is based on a list of themes, as suggested by the school and members of the local community. They include the village church and chapel, the pilgrims, John Wesley the preacher, Scolton Manor, Lion Rock, Wolf Rock, the Preselis, Plumstone, farming, sport and music.

The whole school came out for the unveiling on Friday. Addressing the children, Fran said: “We’ve been so lucky to have worked with everybody at the school, and the best bit for me is seeing all your ideas come together."

Mr Palmer said:“This all started with me coming up with an idea of making our school look a little bit more interesting from the outside. But I didn’t know how to do that as I’m not very creative, luckily I knew Fran, who put me in touch with spacetocreate.

“Fran helped you come up with your drawings and went away to put all the little bits into one big picture, and it’s that big picture you see today.

“I hope it’s something that you’ll be able to spot your work on and something you’ll be proud of and enjoy for many years to come.”

Pip Lewis, director of spacetocreate, added: “The result is unbelievable, given that Fran and Maddie worked with all the children. "The design is so clever in that it weaves in the history and all the different elements the school wanted. It really is a community mosaic."
