A COMMUNITY group that provides help and support for unpaid carers has been chosen as the tenth winners of the Pride in Pembrokeshire Award.

Newport and Area Carers Group impressed the Pride in Pembrokeshire panel with its commitment to delivering a volunteer-led approach to helping carers in the community, the strong links built with other local voluntary groups and close working with the local GP surgery.

"It is clear that Newport and Area Carers Group makes a substantial contribution to improving individual and community well-being in the area," they said.

The group, which comprises of six Newport residents, arranges activities and talks for carers and former carers to enable them to share experiences.

They also put on courses and training for carers to enable them to look after themselves better.

"Caring for people can be tough, lonely and challenging said the group's lead support Ros McGarry.

"What we do pales into insignificance compared to what they do but we just want to help those that help others.

"We just want them to know we are here if they need us."

Launched in 2017, the Pride in Pembrokeshire Awards are a partnership between the Pembrokeshire Public Services Board (PSB) and the Western Telegraph – with each winning entry awarded £200.
