A comprehensive reference guide for new pig keepers in Wales has been launched by Menter Moch Cymru.

Relating specifically to the pig sector in Wales, the 26-page in-depth guide is the first of its kind. In 2019 there were almost 24,500 pigs on holdings in Wales, and the guide has been produced to meet the needs of the growing sector and interest in pig keeping.

Free to view from mentermochcymru.co.uk the guide contains a wealth of information and advice for novice pig keepers as well as being a handy reference resource for more experienced producers.

Covering 14 topics from farrowing to feed and nutrition, there is fundamental information on health and wellbeing as well as vital legislation for pig keeping.

Melanie Cargill, Menter Moch Cymru project manager, said: “We’ve created a ‘go-to guide’ for pig keepers in Wales. Full of useful and practical information whether starting out finishing a few pigs or for those that are considering breeding. It’s a comprehensive guide covering a range of topics.

Among the first users of the guide were the finalists in the Menter Moch Cymru & Wales YFC Pig Finishing Initiative 2020, including the competition’s winner, Teleri Evans, from Llandysul.

Teleri said: “As a novice pig keeper, this guide has been invaluable. There is a lot to learn, but the guide takes you through everything step-by-step. For any additional questions, I have only to pick up the phone to the staff at Menter Moch Cymru, whose support has been tremendous.”
