IT would seem that size was everything in Solva’s annual sunflower competition.
The popular horticulture contest takes place on the second Sunday of September and sees villagers proudly display the fruits of their labour.
This year the tallest plant was entered by Martin Jackson and Carol-Ann Jones whose sunflower stood at an impressive 5 foot 6 inches.
Martin hails from Hereford, but makes a special visit to the village every May bank holiday to buy his Solva sunflower. This year he was rewarded for his long trip by taking the top prize.
He joked: "I have been doing this for years and it’s nice to win. This isn’t even my tallest entry but getting a 6 foot plus sunflower in the car is not an easy task!"
Richard Pascoe won biggest sunflower head with an impressive 8 inches, while Peter Shea-Waters was awarded the sympathy vote with the smallest yet perfectly formed entry taking the prettiest category. The final award for youngest entry went to Oliver and Harry Jones.
New event organiser Penny Dafforn will be adding to the fun next year. She hinted that those with green fingers may be getting a chance to enter alternative categories such as who can grow the biggest beetroot or the prettiest carrot.
