Mr W Morgan

Tewkesbury

Formerly of Haverfordwest

MR William Morgan passed away at the age of 95 on July 11 in Tewkesbury having previously lived in Haverfordwest for 46 years.

Bill was born in 1921, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Morgan, farmers and noted musicians in Cardiganshire.

He was educated in Ardwyn School, Aberystwyth, but his education was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War, and he enlisted in the Royal Air Force, in which he saw service in India, Malaya and Indonesia.

After demobilisation he met and married Zoe, a native of Whitland, with whom he shared over sixty years of ideally happy life.

After the war, Bill resumed his studies, and in addition to qualifying as an Environmental Health Officer he studied law in London University, and was awarded a Bachelor of Law degree.

He then qualified as a barrister, and was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple.

Bill chose to return to work in local government in West Wales, where they both had such strong roots, a decision they never regretted.

Bill had posts with local authorities in Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire, and retired in 1983 as Director of Environmental Health and Housing with Preseli Pembrokeshire District Council.

Bill and Zoe made their home in Haverfordwest, where they both became active in the public life of the town.

Bill was past President of Haverfordwest Rotary Club and other organisations and he and Zoe had the honour of attending the Queens Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

They made many friends, especially neighbours.

They travelled widely to America, Australia, and notably in France which they loved.

Bill and Zoe lived on the Cardigan Road for over forty years.

In 2008 concern about failing health influenced them to move closer to their two sons and their families.

Accordingly they bought an apartment on the marina at Tewkesbury on the Severn, where they lived happily and made new friends.

Zoe passed away in 2010, a loss which affected Bill deeply, they had seldom been apart.

In his 96th year Bill was able to look back on a long and happy life with many permanent friendships.

Both Zoe and Bill both wished to return to Pembrokeshire for their funerals.
