Haverfordwest

ELIZABETH Myfanwy John of Rosemary Lane, Haverfordwest passed away on October 31 at Withybush Hospital.

She was 77.

Originally she lived for over 40 years in St Issells Avenue, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest.

As a child she lived in Withybush area.

Myfanwy (as she liked to be known) was born in Haverfordwest, the eldest of seven children of the late Mary Jane Flood of Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest.

Her siblings (four brothers and two sisters) were John Flood (deceased), Tom Flood, Paul Flood, Jim Flood, Mary Flood and Julie Flood.

Myfanwy was educated in Prendergast Junior School and the Secondary Modern school in Haverfordwest.

She also spent a few of her early years with her family living in London.

This period was during World War II and Myfanwy could still recall the air raid sirens going off to indicate a forthcoming bombing and then being taken quickly to cover by her mother.

Myfanwy’s early employment was spent in O’Dares of Haverfordwest and later in the Forestry Commission where she met her husbandto- be, the late Cromwell John, also of Merlins Bridge.

Myfanwy and Cromwell were married for over 40 years and for most of this time they lived in St Issells Avenue, Merlins Bridge Haverfordwest until Cromwell’s death in 2004.

They had five children Stephen (deceased), Glyn, Paul, Derek and Pamela.

Myfanwy was a quiet-spoken, gentle, kind lady with a lovely sense of humour who was well-known and respected in the local community.

She was especially happy when spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and some of her fondest times and memories were of taking her children to visit her mother during the Summer holidays at Kiln Park Caravan Site in Tenby and then in later years enjoying holidays there herself with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Myfanwy enjoyed walking and shopping and she was a familiar and popular figure at her daughter’s Café “Munchy’s” in Haverfordwest which she regularly visited.

Myfanwy particularly enjoyed a small flutter on the horses and her regular, amusing line was that “one horse had let her down” (from a nice win).

Over the last few years Myfanwy endured deteriorating health as a result of various illnesses but she always dealt with everything she faced with great dignity and strength.

She particularly showed her tremendous character during the last few months and weeks of her life, which made her family very proud.

Myfanwy leaves to mourn Glyn and Julie (son and partner); Paul and Alison (son and daughter-in-law); Derek and Rachel (son and daughter-in-law); Pamela and Dai (daughter and partner); Tom and Josie (brother and sister-in-law); Paul and Julie (brother and sister-in-law); Christine (sister-in-law); Jim (brother); Mary (sister); Julie (sister) plus numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren (too many to name individually) and many more relatives, friends and neighbours both old and new.

The amount of love and warmth that was felt for Myfanwy was evident by the large number who attended her funeral service on November 14 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth which was filled with her family, friends and neighbours.

It was a moving event and a fitting tribute to a muchloved, special lady.

Myfanwy would have been especially proud of the bearers, who were her grandsons Aaron John, Darren John, Liam John and Michael John.

There were family flowers only and donations in lieu of flowers if desired may be sent c/o Miss Pamela John, 8 Williamston Close, Snowdrop Lane, Haverfordwest, in aid of Ward 11, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.

The officiating minister at the funeral service was the Reverend Martyn Evans.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas & Son, Funeral Directors, Freystrop, who were assisted by Mrs Susan Price.

Myfanwy was a dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

All of her family and friends are deeply saddened by her passing and she is deeply missed.

She will always be remembered with great love and affection.

Mrs J M Cole

Narberth

THE funeral took place on Monday November 20 at St.

Andrews Church, Narberth of Mrs Joyce Cole.

She was aged 95.

Joyce was a resident at Blaenmarlais Care Home, Narberth where she passed away peacefully on November 7.

A native of Guildford, Surrey, she joined the RAF in a nursing capacity during World War 2, after bringing up her four children she returned to nursing at the Old County Hospital, Haverfordwest for many years.

Joyce loved her snooker, football, coach trips, bingo and lived for her family.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband William Harold Cole and daughter Pamela, but survived by sons Raymond and Peter, daughter Janet and families.

The funeral service was officiated by Reverend Martin Cox, the bearers were grandsons Daniel, Andrew, Matthew and Christian. Hymns were How Great Thou Art and Abide with Me.

Joyce was laid to rest in the church cemetery with her husband William Harold Cole following the service in church.

There were family flowers only with donations made payable to either Blaenmarlais Care Home or Narberth Health Centre c/o Funeral Directors Messrs W & M J Rossiter & Sons Ltd, Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, SA67 7DR, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs T Davies

Formerly of St Davids

THELMA Davies (nee Phillips) formerly of St Davids, passed away peacefully at Glangwili Hospital, on October 29.

She was 88 years old.

Thelma was the eldest of three children born to William Henry and Ethel Maude Phillips.

She was a sister to Elaine who died just 14 months old, and Alun.

Thelma grew up in the close knit mining community of Cwmbach where the family lived until moving to the School House in Letterston in 1943 where her father became headmaster.

She finished her schooling at Fishguard Grammar School.

Afterwards she was accepted for nurse training and spent two years in Surbiton and a further three years at Guys Hospital, London, where she qualified as an SRN.

On her return to Pembrokeshire she started nursing in Sealyham TB hospital, and later at Kensington Hospital, St Brides.

It was while nursing in the 1950’s that Thelma first met her husband to be, William or ‘Willie’ Davies, of St Davids.

In 1953, Thelma’s father was forced to retire with ill health the family moved to Pegity Cot, St Davids, where she continued to care for her parents until they passed away in the late 1950’s.

In 1961 Thelma and Willie, married and had two children, Helen and Philip.

They moved into St Davids, firstly to Nun Street where she ran a successful B and B and later to Lower Moor, where Willie passed away in 1988.

She later moved Ffynnon Wen, where she lived until earlier this year.

During these ‘retirement’ years, Thelma developed a number of new interests. She was a member of the Cathedral Flower Guild for over 20 years until arthritis forced her to give it up.

An active member of the Mothers Union and the Cathedral Women’s Fellowship of which she later became Secretary. It was in this capacity that she first became involved in the founding of the St Davids Day Centre for the over 60’s. She enjoyed arranging the varied programme of events and outings for the members, and in 1997, Thelma received the inaugural ‘Certificate of Recognition’ from St Davids City Council for the time and effort given to benefit the community over many years.

Thelma always enjoyed handicrafts, whether it was giving Welsh quilting lessons with her mother in Fishguard, embroidery, cross stitch or the years of knitting for family and fundraising.

She also enjoyed painstakingly creating dolls house miniatures.

The funeral service was held at the Lady Chapel, St Davids Cathedral on November 10, followed by a service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

The services were officiated by Canon Dorrien Davies of St Davids Cathedral.

The principle mourners were Helen and Gareth Beardmore (daughter and son-in-law); Phil and Jane Davies (son and daughter-inlaw); Sian, Claire, Steven and Jonathan (grandchildren).

There were family flowers only but donations if desired, can be made to RNLI (St.Davids Branch) c/o W.G.B.Mathias, Funeral Directors, St Davids, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr D Canning

Rickeston

Mr David ‘Dai’ Canning passed away on November 1 at his home in Rickeston, Milford Haven.

He was 71.

As a native of Milford Haven he worked at Westhill Farm, Steynton Road, Puffin Produce in Thornton and then later in Haverfordwest.

A lot of his working life revolved around the production of Pembrokeshire early potatoes.

David enjoyed rearing calves and spending time with his family.

The family left to mourn are Mrs Lynne Canning (wife); Sarah and Clive (daughter and husband); Joanne and David (daughter and partner); David (son); Nicola and Damian (daughter and partner); Paul and Catrin (son and partner); Jack, Ellie, Oliver, Liam, Ruby, Bethan and Lucy (grandchildren); Valerie and Geoff, Margaret, Olwen, Graham and Chris (brothers and sisters); nieces and nephews too numerous to name.

The funeral service took place at St Peters and St Cewydd Church, Steynton and was officiated by Father Harri Williams.

The bearers were David and Paul Canning (sons); Jack Davies and Liam Bowie (grandsons).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, of Milford Haven.

Mr D Owen

Whitland

Formerly of Robeston Wathen

DAVID passed away peacefully in Glangwili hospital after a short illness on October 18 at the age of 84.

David or Dai as he was known as to many was born in Robeston Wathen and lived there with his parents and his younger brother Lawrence.

They lived in Freystrop for a few years but later returned to Penrhiw in Robeston Wathen, where David lived until he married his neighbour Marianne in 1965.

They both set up home in Whitland where they lived for 51 years.

David was always interested in cars and began his working life with Fred Rees in Haverfordwest and later went to work in the transport department in the Unigate factory, Whitland, where he worked as garage foreman for 36 years.

David and Marianne were happily married and had three children and five grandchildren whom they adored.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn, on October 27 with donations in lieu to the British Heart Foundation and the Adult Critical Care Unit, Glangwili Hospital c/o David Morris, 2 Llwyn Meredith, Carmarthen SA31 1EF.
