Pembrokeshire has proved once again that it can talk the talk when it comes to the skill of public speaking.

Young farmers of all ages from across the county travelled to Builth Wells to compete in the Wales YFC public speaking finals on Saturday, March 26th, and a run of excellent results saw Pembrokeshire emerge as the top county for the second year running.

The junior reading team got the ball rolling when Tomos Evans, of Brawdy YFC, Sioned Thomas, from Llysyfran YFC and Sara Watkins, of Eglwyswrw YFC, won their competition. As well as being nine marks ahead of the other teams, Tomos also won the best reader award.

Members from Templeton YFC made up the junior speaking team, with chairman Vincent Morse topping his section and the team, which also included Vincent’s sister Bryony and Hannah Phillips, placed second overall.

The senior after-dinner speaking team of Clynderwen YFC’s Alun Griffiths; Steffan Kurtz, Fishguard YFC; Eoin O’Mahony, Keyston YFC; Wayne Shanklin, South Pembs YFC; and Richard Summons, Tiers Cross YFC were also winners in their competition.

Along with the intermediate team’s fifth placing, this propelled Pembrokeshire to the top of the overall standings, and all members were delighted to take home the shield for highest placed county once again.

The junior reading and speaking teams, and the senior team will now go on to represent Wales at the national finals in October.

The Welsh public speaking finals were held on the same day, and a trio of thirds in the junior reading, speaking and intermediate competitions saw Pembrokeshire placed third overall.

Capping a great day for Pembrokeshire was the superquiz team, made up of members from Brawdy YFC, along with a member from Eglwyswrw, who also won the Wales quiz final.
