The newly formed Dyfed Carriage Club, held its first driving jolly in conjunction with the British Driving Society at the National Botanical Gardens at Llanarthne in the form of an Easter Bonnet Parade.

A week of heavy rain deterred many members, resulting in just a few turnouts.

However, carriage driving newcomers Rhian Jones, of Nantgaredig and Denise Dempsey, of Pencader, made huge efforts in preparing for the event with their homemade Easter bonnets and brought the sunshine with them.

The rain held off for the presentations, judging and drive around the gardens.

Denise was thrilled to mark her debut into the world of carriage driving with first place for her outstanding achievement.

Denise has only recently taken up driving, after being inspired by a chance driving demonstration by club chairman Lester Dagge.

She said: “I have to say that I am overwhelmed by the sheer generosity and friendliness of the club and fellow carriage drivers for their help and support.”

The club is keen to promote best practice driving safety and was grateful for the assistance of Mark Evans in conducting a pre-event safety check, while the army of club supporters were much appreciated for their help in marshalling the drive.

A future drive may be planned for later in the season.

Dyfed Carriage Club was set up six months ago to promote safe best practice carriage driving and already has about 30 members.

The club is open to anyone with an interest in carriage driving, you don’t even have to have a horse or carriage to join.

The club meets on the first Monday of the month at Whitemill Inn near Nantgaredig.
