J. J. MORRIS reports another excellent entry in the sheep section. Prime lambs saw a fast and buoyant trade throughout for all weight categories with a total entry of 927 lambs forward. A top price of 160p/kg was achieved with the overall average levelling out at 149.2p/kg. Store lambs were also in good demand with the average being 140.2p/kg. A few less cull ewes were forward and with quality being very mixed, a top price of £67.50 was had. The breeding section met a strong trade also with the best pen of two year old ewes topping at £105 and the best ram peaked at £222 for a four year old Texel. Calves again were very mixed in quality with the best bull calves peaking at £258.

Carmarthen Dairy

August 12th

BJP reports: Dairy Cattle (50). This week saw a good entry of dairy cattle.

Gest Fannella 305 out of Gest Fannella 241 GP83 and Gest Lavender 16 out of Gest Lavender 12 (six generations of VG/EX). Two pedigree firstst calvers from Mr Maskell and partners, Cwmgest took joint top price of the day. Both making £2,450. They were closely followed by Puregold Lee Barberry 4 another pedigree first calver from Watkins Partnership, Plasparcay. She made £2,250.

Meanwhile in the commercial section top price of the day went to Mr Jones, The Elms, for a first calver giving 5.5 gallons daily.

Overall in the recorded section six cows and 12 heifers averaged £1,101 and £1,796. They were joined by eight cows and 24 heifers in the commercial section averaging £1,465 and £1,320.

Dai Lewis Auctioneers report as follows: Similar numbers forward in all sections with producers taking advantage of the odd dry day for harvesting. Lambs saw another brisk run as per current national trends. Stores saw a fast run as did culls, and breeding ewes sold well throughout.

In addition to the normal fatstock mart, the South Wales Region of the Charollais Sheep Society held their inaugural Commercial Ram Show and Sale at the mart, and a good trade ensued for the entry forward, with emphasis on the quality tup. The Judge was Huw Tudor, of Tynberllan, Llanilar.
