Whitland 53-12 Pembrokeshire XV

WHITLAND RFC remembered Roy Newton in style on Monday with a 53-12 win against a Pembrokeshire select XV.

A large crowd turned out to honour the memory of the former club coach and stalwart, and all proceeds from the day went to the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.

The game was played over three 25 minute periods, and after the Borderers led 10-5 after the opening third, they pulled away in the final two to ease home.

They opened their scoring through winger Duncan Evans, with outside half Scott Newton converting and then adding a penalty.

Pembrokeshire struck back at the end of the opening period when Craig Barnett touched down in the corner.

But the Borders took control in the second period with Carwyn Jones (2) and Mike Georgiou adding tries, all converted by Jonathan Thomas.

In the final third James Griffiths scored under the posts for Pembrokeshire, with Ianto Griffiths converting, but Whitland finished strongly with further tries by Lee Glanville, Scott Newton, Fraser Watson and Matt Haden, two converted by Setaro and one by Watson to round off a win for the Borderers and a memorable tribute to Roy Newton.
