Division One:

Narberth 1-2 Merlins Bridge

WILL Haworth grabbed a late winner to secure Merlins Bridge a hard fought victory over Narberth at Jesse Road - as the visitors took full advantage of other title rivals  having their games called off.

With the score level at 1-1, Haworth’s direct free-kick rebounded off the crossbar and found the net via the back of home goalkeeper Jason Jones.

It was fortuitous for Nathan Thomas’ Wizards, but it secured his side’s eighth victory of the season that sees The Bridge just two points behind leaders Goodwick, whilst Narberth are third as the league takes a break this weekend for Christmas.

And it was a cruel blow for The Bluebirds, who on the overall balance of play could argue they deserved a point for their whole hearted efforts.

It was Narberth who took the lead in the tenth minute when they were awarded a penalty for handball inside the box. Tony Evans took responsibility and fired the resulting spot-kick past Gary Thomas.

On the half hour mark the visitors equalised when centre back Richard Hughes struck at the far post.

The second half was keenly contested and at times it got fesity between the player, giving referee Paul Rooney a tough job to keep calm on the pitch.

Then five minutes from full time and Haworth earned his side the points - although there was still time for late drama when Narberth’s Callum O’Connell went close with an injury time header that would have salvaged a point.
