They started the campaign with a first team tipped to challenge for the Division One title - and a second team expected to more than hold their own in Division Three.

But tonight the Pembrokeshire Football League have confirmed that West Dragons have folded together.

The seconds were disbanded earlier this season, but just 24 hours after they were unable to field a team to play Goodwick United, the first team have now also disbanded.

It's a sad end to a roller coaster season for the Dragons, who shot up through the divisions after forming little over a decade ago.

They were promoted to Division One as champions in 2012/13 and five years ago today also reached the Senior Cup final, where they edged out 3-2 by Johnston. At the time the clash set a new record for money taken on the gate.

But after finishing third in the top flight last season, they parted company with manager Matthew Price just one game into this campaign, before a chain of events saw them lose players and change bosses on several occasions.

They have struggled to field a full squad in the latter half of this season and Lee Palmer, who had been in charge in recent weeks, said he was devastated the side had to fold.

"10 years of hard work has come to this, he told Telegraph Sport.

"It's been a massive part of our lives and we loved it. We have had a rollercoaster season, and having lost over 30 boys we were left with bare bones.

"We had every intention of fulfilling our fixtures for the integrity of the league and for the respect of the teams we've played and teams we had left to play - but due to injuries and three red cards we literally could not put a team out."

"It's a sad day but I would like to thank everyone that pulled on a shirt for us. I also apologise to teams it's affected and thank you to the league for a great 10 years."

Striker Scott Crawford added: "We just have not got the numbers to keep going.

"Personally I thank the players and managers we've had over the years."

The news will have implications at both the top and bottom of Division One.

Hakin are the main beneficiaries, having only take one point off The Dragons over two games. Goodwick will lose three points, and Merlins Bridge six.

It means the Phoenix Boys are back top, three clear of The Vikings and Wizards, but Hakin have played two less games than both their title rivals.

At the bottom, Herbrandston lose six points, meaning now they are just three ahead of bottom club Milford United.

Pembrokeshire Football League secretary Brian Hawkins said a decision on how many clubs would be relegated now is yet to have been made.

He also told Telegraph Sport it was concerning news for everyone involved.

"No one wants to see a club fold and the League Council is saddened by this. We will be adjusting the Division One table accordingly."

It means there will be one less game in Division One tomorrow, with Neyland originally scheduled to host The Dragons.
