Weaver Callan Cup final:

Monkton Swifts 4-0 Pennar Robins

Monkton Swifts paid a good tribute to a former local football star last night as they beat rivals Pennar to win the annual Weaver Callan Memorial Cup.

An even first half was set to finish goalless when new signing Dylan Davies broke the deadlock at Monkton Lane, and Joe Lewis’ team added three more goals after the break

The tournament, first played in 2013, honours the memory of Stephen Callan, better known as Weaver – a former captain of Pembroke Borough when they played in the Welsh League. He died back in 2012, aged 50, and his son Jamie later came up with the idea of a memorial tournament.

This season’s semi finals saw big wins for the two Division One sides, with Pennar beating the Borough 5-1, after Monkton had won 12-1 against Hundleton.

That set up a derby final between The Swifts and Robins  - and for 44 minutes it was a tight affair before new signing Davies put the hosts ahead, intercepting a pass on the edge of the 18 yard box and firing home past Pennar keeper Scott Trayhern.

Monkton’s top scorer from last season, James Russell, was introduced for the second half and he made it 2-0 with a looping header, and then another new Monkton signing, Jake Seaton, added a third with a sharp finish after the home side caught Pennar napping with a short corner.

Patrick McDonagh then rounded off the scoring, sliding home from close range.

But the night was about more than football, with a good crowd helping raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust via a prize raffle – where the top prize was a golfing four ball at the Welsh national course at The Vale.

And members of ‘Weaver’s’ family were also present to witness another nice tribute to the popular player - with Jamie thanking all players and everyone who attended, before presenting the trophy to Monkton skipper Shaun Jones.

A just giving page set up to raise further funds for the chosen charity has already passed £600 - and anyone wanting to donate themselves can do so via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stephencallan.
