Pembrokeshire golfer Carys Worby produced a superb week of golf to take the Welsh Girls' title at the Newport Club in Gwent.

She beat beat Radyr’s Alice Thomas 2&1 in the Girls’ final to complete a fantastic week - having made the final with wins over Jessica Atwell (Llanwern - 5&4), Lydia Cryer (Nelson - 4&2), and Eleanor Willis (St Pierre - 2 up).

The win was the perfect response to the disappointment of being left out of the Wales team for the European Masters this year.

“I didn’t get picked for the European Masters this year, having played the last two years, so some people might say I had a bit to prove but I really enjoyed the Welsh Girls,” said the 17-year-old.

“I like the course but it does not favour longer hitters so I was playing safe with irons off the tee.

“I know it is a good tournament so I was excited rather than nervous coming in. The win has helped my confidence a lot after not being picked, with a lot of big events coming up.”

Indeed, Worby is now preparing for the English Under 18 Championships, the British Girls Championships, and the English Amateur, and is also hoping to be selected for the Home Internationals.

Worby is a member of Newport Links in Pembrokeshire, and another player from the club, Ffion Evans, also qualified for the Championship. She fought hard before being knocked out by Ellen Nicholas (Ham Manor Golf Club) in a match that went to the 18th hole.
