Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League previews and fixtures for Saturday, September 1st (2.30pm):

Division 1:

Carew v Clarbeston Road

The challenge for Carew is to challenge and better still, break up the much talked about top three who finished above them last season.

And they're going the right way about it early on, seeing off Monkton 4-0 and Lamphey 2-0.

They are yet to concede and Jack Christopher has underlined his importance by scoring in both games - but the dynamic of the season alters when the midweek games stop and the Saturday stuff begins

Clarbie were unpredictable last season and have started this one in similar fashion - thumped 5-1 by Goodwick before a 2-0 win at Narberth. The fit again Richard Bevan scored in the latter game along with Jason Griffiths - and that strike partnership will be key to player manager Matthew Ellis and co.

Pre-season football is never a true indication, but The Rooks beat Clarbie 5-2 in the recent Micky Thomas Cup final, and I'd make them favourites here.

Prediction: Carew 4-2 Clarbeston Road.

Herbrandston v Neyland

It's too early to talk about crucial games, but the pressure is already on both sides here.

Herbie weren't expected to get anything from matches against Merlins Bridge and Hakin, but Sean Thomas will know his side now must start competing in games for 90 minutes and picking up points.

The Nomads too have had a tough start, losing to Pennar before that 10-1 thumping from Monkton on Tuesday. And the cricket club's involvement in the Welsh Cup final on Sunday may hinder availability of some players.

How close either side is to full strength here will be important, and in truth, I don't have a clue which way it will go. So I'll sit on the fence.

Prediction: Herbrandston 2-2 Neyland.

Lamphey v Merlins Bridge

Bridge have scored 13 goals in five games, which leaves you wondering how they only have four points.

The answer of course, is because they went to Goodwick on Tuesday and scored five times, whilst contriving to concede the same amount.

Manager Matthew D'Ivry has few worries going forward - with Joe Leahy, Adam Hawkins, Nathan Greene, and Will Haworth all impressing thus far, but The Wizards must shore up at the back and need regular keeper Gary Thomas back fit.

It's been a slow start to Lamphey with a home loss to Saundersfoot coupled with that defeat at Carew, with the returning Lewis Haines getting their only goal so far.

Jonny Goodrick will know his side must carry more threat tomorrow, and a third straight loss to start the season will cause concern for The Stags.

Where they can take heart however, is that emphatic win over Bridge late last season. They'll need a similar display to get a result here.

Prediction: Lamphey 1-4 Merlins Bridge.

Milford United v Monkton Swifts

A poor start followed by an emphatic win - Monkton bounced back from their Carew hammering in style at Neyland.

Hat tricks for Ryan and Dylan Davies set up that 10-1 win, with last season's top scorer James Russell scoring twice. Ben Steele has also signed back for the club, which will only add to their firepower.

Milford manager Adrian Hutchings has again vowed to stick with youngsters this season, and they more than held their own against Hakin (losing 2-1) before a 3-0 defeat to Pennar.

The Robins were always competitive last season but struggled through a lack of goals. They will fight hard again tomorrow, but I think the Swifts will prevail - all be it by a lesser margin than Tuesday.

Prediction: Milford United 1-3 Monkton Swifts.

Narberth v Hakin United

The Vikings laboured somewhat in that opening win at Marble Hall, but were a lot closer to their best in the 7-0 win at Herbie this week.

With Nicky Woodrow still out injured, the scoring of Justin Harding will be crucial while Camron Thomas is looking like he can fill the void left in midfield after Jack Wilson and Ben Fawcett's departures to Haverfordwest.

Narberth battled back from 2-0 to draw with St Clears before losing to Clarbie in midweek, but their defence, bolstered by the return of Kyle Quartermaine, faces its biggest test so far tomorrow.

I don't think Hakin are firing on all cylinders, but I think they'll make it nine points from nine.

Prediction: Narberth 1-3 Hakin United.

Pennar Robins v Saundersfoot Sports

Last season Pennar started with a whimper - this time around their off like a house on fire.

Back to back clean sheets and two 3-0 wins will have pleased Chris Lloyd, and the capture of Ben Adams after Angle folded has paid dividends. he has four of his side's six goals so far.

Saundersfoot will also be pleased with their start. After beating Lamphey they came from 2-0 down to earn a point with St Clears, with Nick Cope scoring in both games.

Tough to predict this, but with home advantage, I'll edge towards Pennar.

Prediction: Pennar Robins 2-1 Saundersfoot.

St Clears v Goodwick United

St Clears have two points having twice thrown away 2-0 leads, firstly with Narberth and then Saundersfoot.

Danny Peters has struck in both games and while the Carmarthenshire Saints are yet to have their full squad available, they'll need to tomorrow.

Striker Jordan Griffiths has started in style for Goodwick with back to back hat tricks, but Wayne O'Sullivan wouldn't have been happy with his side conceding five times against Bridge - despite them gaining a late draw.

The Phoenix Boys face Hakin a week Saturday - and won't want to go into that on the back of more dropped points.

Prediction: St Clears 2-5 Goodwick United.
