Pembrokeshire rugby previews for Saturday, September 29th (2.30pm):

WRU Championship:

Narberth v Bedlinog

Narberth will still have nightmares from this fixture last season, letting a 29-0 lead slip to lose in injury time.

Fair to say there will be no complacency this time around, and they go in unbeaten after a hard fought win in Newcastle Emlyn last time out.

There were big performances in the back row that day from Andrew Cooke and Rich Reed, and Sean Gale's men proved they can dig deep and win ugly if needs be.

But Bedlinog themselves are in form - with three straight wins since losing on the opening day to Tata Steel.

They too battled hard to beat Rhydyfelin 16-11 last Saturday, and while Narberth are scoring tries aplenty, this may be another day where they have to fight hard up front to earn the right to go wide.

National Plate Round 1:

Carmarthen Athletic v Tenby United

This is a tricky tie for Tenby.

A team without a win in Division One away to a side unbeaten in Division Two - it has all the making of a cup upset.

But coach Gareth Thomas will take encouragement from the way they fought back from a terrible start against Gowerton, and this is a chance to get a win on the board without the pressure of league points at stake.

Centre Aaron James was another to impress last week and The Seasiders will want to get him in space as much as they can.

Gorseinon v Whitland

Interesting tie this between two teams with an identical record in Division One West - winning three times and losing once.

The Borderers were below par in losing 19-18 to Yr Hendy on Saturday, while Gorseinon also had a dogfight, beating Llanelli Wanderers 14-13.

This is a chance for them to put things right ahead of an away league game with Gowerton on October 6th - but how seriously both teams want to take the Plate competition may well dictate the outcome here.

For what it's worth, Whitland beat Gorseinon 27-20 at home on the opening day of the season, a game they controlled for long spells before the Swansea side mounted a late fightback.

Gowerton v Crymych

These are frustrating times for Crymych - they have not won since the opening day and yet losing bonus points in each of their three straight defeats shows they are not far away.

They will certainly need a better first half than against Felinfoel last weekend, and even a try hat trick from Osian Davies wasn't enough as they lost 25-21.

Goweton are perhaps favourites having won three from four this season, and The Preseli Men will be wary of home kicker Pat Spowart, who punished Tenby indiscipline with three first half penalties ay Heywood Lane.

Kidwelly v Fishguard

The bottom side in Division One takes on the bottom side in Division Two, and both need a first win for momentum if nothing else.

In their last game against Burry Port Fishguard again competed well, but composure at key times cost them, especially as they dominated possession late on pushing for the winning score.

Skipper Chris Shousha led from the front that day and while losing in the Plate isn't a disaster for his side, they won't want to go into a home game with Pontarddulais (October 6th) on the back fo another loss.

Pembroke v Aberystwyth

A repeat of last season's KO Cup final as Pembroke host Abertstwyth.

The Scarlets competed well that night and although Aber's power proved too much, but this is a difficult tie for the Division One side.

They've only won once in three games while Pembroke won their opening two matches - before missed chances cost them dear against both Carmarthen Athletic and Burry Port.

Last season Geraint Lewis' side proved their cup credentials by reaching two finals, but the Plate is obviously a big step up from the Bowl and if they have periods of dominance tomorrow, they must make them count.

St Clears v Loughor

Tries from Rhodri Jones and Cieran Davies for St Clears up and running last week as they beat Tycroes 14-0.

I suspect they won't be placing much emphasis on the Plate, but this is a chance to notch another win and go to Pontyberem a week later with the bit between their teeth.

Loughor have three wins, all of them tight, from four games in the league this season so it's another tough test for the Carmarthenshire Saints, but one they face with renewed confidence.

Division Three West A:

Cardigan v Neyland

The All Blacks are on a roll at the moment with George Evans (scrum half) and Ben Williams (No 8) the latest young players to stand out as they beat Llanybydder 22-16 last time out.

They currently have 15 points from 15 so will go to Cardigan with confidence - although the visitors notched their first win last weekend at Tregaron.

Again there was a try for skipper and full back John Lumb who is showing his class week in week out, and new outside half Iwan John is also impressing.

If both sides are at full tilt, this could be quite the battle at the King George Vth Memorial Ground.

Haverfordwest v St Davids

After that defeat against Milford, The Blues are back on track after comfortable wins against Pantyffynon (National Bowl) and Pembroke Dock.

There were big points hauls in both those games from Craig Barnett, and while he is not a No 10 by trade, he will punish teams if given space.

St Davids must be wary of that tomorrow. They competed hard up front against Milford last week but unforced errors and missed tackles were punished.

They must address those areas to have any chance of taking something from this.

Llangwm v Aberaeron

Llangwm seem to be revitalised at the moment, and only trailed Laugharne 14-13 in the second half on Saturday before fading late on.

Lewis Wood has seemingly re-signed for the club as another boost, and The Wasps aren't currently plagued by the lack of numbers which has hurt them in recent seasons.

So this won't be easy for Aberaeron, despite a good cup win over Milford last time out.

In No 10 Rhodri Jenkins they do have an outside half who can dictate a game and punish sides with his goal kicking - as proved by seven penalties against The Mariners, but Llangwm will make them battle up front.

It could be very physical at Pill Parks.

Pembroke Dock Quins v Llanybydder

It's been said for years, but when The Quins are at full strength they can be a useful outfit.

But they clearly weren't at Haverfordwest last week, and have now gone three league games without scoring a try this season.

Yet in all of those matches they have been in the game in the first half before fading, and Neil Machin will know his side must produce an 80 minute performance here.

They may be buoyed by Llanybydder losing in Neyland last week, and it took a late try from scrum half Llyr Jones to earn a bonus point. Indeed, away trips won't be easy for Bydder this season given their location.

The accuracy of Steff Richards with the boot did yield 11 points though, so The Dock must be wary of conceding penalties in their own territory.
