Second Division Cup Round 1: St Ishmaels 1-2 Johnston

A late Ryan Doyle penalty sent Johnston into the quarter finals at Tish.

From the first whistle it was clear this would be an intense affair, and Tish started the better as Joel Morgan flashed a shot wide.

But The Tigers got into their rhythm and nearly went ahead as Doyle latched onto a through ball before lobbing Connor Garton – only for the ball to bounce back off the post.

The deadlock was broken 20 minutes in though as Luke Hayward sent a long ball into the area from a free kick - and it eventually fell to Doyle was able to tee up strike partner Scott Crawford to drive a shot home.

Tish were a danger from set pieces though as their target man Brennan Devonold proved a handful in the box, and it was his header that forced Johnston keeper Jim Payne in to a fine, diving save.

The home side did draw level before the break after Payne came off his line to punch a cross clear with Devonald lurking, but the ball fell to Nathan Daines whose shot found the net via a deflection off Liam James.

But with 15 minutes left Jake Smith surged into the area only to be brought down by Connor Daines - and Doyle stepped up to calmly dispatch the ball into the bottom corner.

Both sides threatened in the closing stages as Tish pushed forward and invariably left spaces at the back, but there were no further goals as the away side edged into the quarter finals.
