From playing in local pubs to taking on the best in Europe – 10 years of dedication for pool player Tom James had paid off after he was selected to represent Wales.

The 21-year-old from Templeton, who plays for the RAOB Club in the Narberth and District League, will play for his country in the European Championships in Bridlington, England, this April.

It follows his displays in the four Welsh Tour events in 2018, which saw him finish the year ranked inside the top 10 in Wales.

“I’m really excited to show what I can do,” he told Telegraph Sport.

“It will be a better standard than I’ve ever played before but I can’t wait to test myself.”

Tom started out aged 11 and travelled regularly to Llanelli for lessons, and had coaching from Welsh snooker legend Terry Griffiths as a youngster. He is grateful to his family for their support.

“They drove me up to lessons and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without their commitment as well as mine. I have to say thank you to them.”

At 16, he became the youngest ever winner of the Tenby Singles and has a numerous other local titles to his name. He currently plays competitive pool twice a week, snooker on a Monday, and practices for up to four other nights.

“My goal is to play professionally but for now my focus is the next Welsh Tour event this month and preparing for the European Championships.”

Tom is looking individuals or local businesses to help sponsor him and anyone who does will have a slot on his playing polo shirts, and great publicity at televised tournaments. Anyone interested in helping can contact him on 07889 675 269, or e-mail thomascjames2@gmail.com.
