Manderwood Pembrokeshire League Division 1: Hakin United 2-3 Merlins Bridge

Joe Leahy scored twice to help Merlins Bridge narrowly win at Hakin United to secure runners up spot in the league table.

Both teams were playing for pride, and there were some difficult and windy conditions at the Obs.

After a goalless first period, things certainly livened up in the goal stakes in the second period.

The Vikings took the lead in the 65th minute, when Ben Aldred drilled in from 12 yards after latching onto Justin Harding’s cross.

But within four minutes the Wizards equalised as Leahy saw his penalty attempt parried by Vikings’ keeper Leigh Broome, only for the striker to bury the rebound.

Three minute later and the visitors took the lead, Luke Hayward threaded a through ball for Adam Hawkins to round Broome.

Hayward assisted for the Wizards’ third goal, the midfielder crossed for Leahy to sweep home from the six yard box.

Five minutes before full time and the Vikings pulled a goal back to set-up a tense ending. Substitute Adrian Devonald struck a sweet low left footed finish into the far corner, but the hosts failed to get an equaliser as the Wizards held on for victory and sealed second spot.

Bridge will now turn their attention to Tuesday, and the West Wales Cup final with Carew at the Liberty Stadium.
