Pembrokeshire Under 13s Junior League final: Lawrenny (123-4) beat Whitland (77-6) by 46 runs

Lawrenny proved too strong for Whitland in the Under 13s final at Cresselly last night.

Lawrenny topped the North group by one point over Whitland and beat Pembroke Dock in their semi final, while the Borderers defeated Hook in the other.

Whitland captain Luc Owen won the toss and decided to bowl first.

An early wicket from Luc removed the dangerous Will Allen but the Lawrenny batsmen weathered the early storm and their innings began to build momentum.

With 10 overs gone the score was at 57-2 and Charlie Arthur (24), Finley Lewis and Rhys Eynon (both 26) all batted well, hitting the ball to various parts of the boundary.

The Whitland bowlers kept plugging away with some good keeping by Daniel Howells. Luc Owen (1-9), Lee Strudley (1-10), Rhys Jones (1-13) and Ethan Rhyan (1-17) took the wickets for Whitland - but the final score of 123 was impressive in the circumstances.

Whitland needed a strong start but with Noah Williams and Oscar Lewis opening the bowling runs were hard to come by - and with the score at 34-3 off 10 Lawrenny seemed on top.

However, Ethan Ryan and Luc Owens took the attack to Lawrenny, scoring 16 off the next over before the dangerous Rhys Eynon (2-24) broke the partnership.

Owen (23), Ryan (17) and Cian Rees (13) all did well but Noah Williams took 1-8, Rhydian Eynon 1-13, Finley Lewis 1-7 and Ethan Hall 1-6, as the Lawrenny attack proved too strong.

The final was enjoyed by a large supportive crowd and in the presentation after the match Martin Jones (junior organiser) congratulated both sides on reaching the final.

He thanked Cresselly for hosting the final and groundsmen Richard Arthur and Dennis Chiffi - and afterwards the club laid on food and other refreshments.

Umpires Mervyn John and Jon Willington were also thanked and coaches and scorers Robert Williams and Mathew Davies all contributed to the evening.

Sponsors Colin and Angela John, Llewelyn Davies & Co Chartered Accountants, were acknowledged for their continued and valuable support of junior cricket. County Chairman Paul Webb and wife Janice presented the runners up medals, sponsored by the Tavernspite Nurseries, and Colin the winners trophy to Lawrenny.
