Joe Lennon Cup semi final: Herbrandston 1-1 Milford Athletic (Athletic win 4-3 on penalties)

For just the second time, Milford Athletic will contest the Joe Lennon Cup final after a penalty shootout win over a youthful Herbie team last night.

After the game had finished 1-1 in 90 minutes, Paul Howard's side prevailed 4-3 on spot kicks and on Friday will play the winner of Hakin or Milford United, who meet tonight at The Obs (6.15pm).

It was the Division 3 side who led 1-0 at half time thanks to Gareth Quirk's free kick, the winger's 20 yard free kick finding the net via the fingertips of Herbie keeper Owen Thomas.

The latter then made two good saves before the break to keep it at 1-0 and then early in the second half, did well to push away John Lydon's volley.

But Sean Thomas' team then finished strongly, and levelled late on when Marc Boswell's 25 yard free kick flew past Athletic keeper Jonathan Pawlett.

It was Pawlett who then made saves from McCauley Marshallsay and Archie McCallum to force penalties.

Quirk, Lydon, Haydn Dimond, and Liam Clarke all made no mistake for Athletic, with Dan Jones, Adrian Rees and McCallum on target for Herbie.

But Pawlett saved Marshallsay's effort while Callum English fired over to send the Milford side into the final.

  • Also last night was the John Bailey semi final at Phoenix Park, Goodwick, where the hosts easily accounted for Clarbeston Road. Goals from Rhys Dalling (2), James Bryan, Jordan Griffiths, Matty Delaney, Jonny Horgan, and an own goal did the job - with the other semi final between Fishguard Sports and Cardigan Town taking place tonight.
