The final day.

Well not quite, that’s reserved for the Harrison-Allen Bowl final a week Saturday but tomorrow, all the title, promotion, and relegation outcomes in the five Pembroke County Cricket Leagues will be known. And some divisions have far more to sort than others.

Last weekend was enough to get tongues wagging. Inevitably at this stage of the summer some results appear skewed, and suddenly regular players from the top two divisions start appearing in the best performance columns further down the pyramid.

Throw the issue of an unregistered player and questionable call off into the mix and no one was short on talking points.

It may not be right, but the reality is very few can say they’ve never played in a side that has been strengthened, or weakened, for tactical purposes. And it’s something very difficult to police.

Sure enough, it is the lower divisions that have the most riding on them tomorrow – with only the title race between Narberth and Llechryd outstanding in the top two tiers. All five games in Division Three have something riding on them, and the same applies to Division Four. The race for the silverware in Division Five can still go one of three ways.

Regardless, recent events in Pembrokeshire cricket should put a lot into perspective. Last week, grounds around the county fell silent in tribute to the late John Williams – who lost his life because of a tragic accident while volunteering for the game he loved.

A lot is said about the perceived lack of commitment and playing numbers in Pembrokeshire cricket these days. So for the last day of the season if nothing else, if you’re genuinely available and selected then quit worrying about whether the lads are out early for the Bank Holiday, or if you’ll finish in time for Liverpool v Arsenal, or if there’ll be enough morning dew to justify calling the game off.

Think about the prolonged dedication John showed to local cricket - and just get out there and bloody play.

Division One:

After the final day thrills of 2018, this time around there’s nothing to see here.

Well not in terms of the major issues anyway. Neyland are champions, Lawrenny are runners up, and Burton and Llangwm are relegated.

There will be some jostling for positions 3-8 but by in large, the drama will lie elsewhere.

Division Two:

All roads lead to Llechryd, a contrary analogy I admit, but that is where the only real game of meaning takes place in the second tier.

The Cardiganshire side are 17 points clear of tomorrow’s visitors, second placed Narberth. Any kind of win or winning draw obviously guarantees the leaders the title.

Narberth win outright and they are almost certainly champions. I’m no captain, but I suspect whoever wins the toss will want to bat second.

To clarify, if the sides finish level on points Narberth take the title by virtue of the fact they have played one less game than their hosts. Should they be on course for a winning draw then the calculators (mobile phones) will be out.

For what it’s worth Johnston will play hosts to Cresselly 2nds – both are down already but there is some pride at stake with the winner avoiding bottom spot.

Division Three:

Now the fun and games start.

The title is now Herbrandston’s to lose as they go in with 402 points after that nail biting win over Lamphey last week, who now lie second on 383. Llanrhian’s abandoned game at Llangwm 2nds last week saw them drop from first to third on 380.

In short, 12 points at Narberth 2nds tomorrow will see Herbie go up as champions - 11 or less could let Lamphey in if they pick up maximum points at home to Laugharne. Again, should the sides finish level the Stags would pip them by virtue of playing one less game.

Should either the top two slip up, Llanrhian can pounce if they win at home to Stackpole. The home side have played less games now than both Herbie and Lamphey so if they finish lev…….ah, you know the drill by now.

At the bottom Lawrenny 2nds are down, but tomorrow’s visitors Llangwm 2nds are now in the mire. Their decision to call off their home game with Llanrhian last Saturday inevitably raised some eyebrows, and cost them further in midweek Whitland 2nds were belatedly awarded 30 points from their game at Laugharne. This came after it emerged the latter had fielded an ineligible player.

That means tomorrow Llangwm will be second bottom on 196 points, and simply have to win. Should they do so they are likely to overtake whoever comes off second best in the Haverfordwest 3rds v Whitland 2nds game, who lie on 209 and 210 points respectively.

Of course all three sides battling to stay up have the capacity to strengthen should they wish to do so.

Division Four:

Carnage.

The top two will battle for the title, third place is safe, and everyone below could still go down.

St Ishmaels 2nds and Neyland 2nds are already up. Nine points for Tish at home to Burton 2nds will seal the title, while their rivals have to beat Llanrhian 2nds and hope for a favour.

Now from fourth placed down it goes – Llechryd 2nds (271 points), Crymych (267), Burton 2nds (262), Hook 2nds (258), Saundersfoot 2nds (253), Carew 3rds (251), Haverfordwest 4ths (relegated).

Carew host Llechryd, Hook welcome Crymych, and Saundersfoot play Haverfordwest. Out of the teams named there it’s only Crymych who have no option to draw in help from above.

Basically, if The Rooks lose they are all but down. But if they win or draw, then let the nerve shredding commence.

Division Five:

Hundleton sit top on 238 points, but have their ‘bye’ week tomorrow. They’ll be praying to the rain gods but an unlikely washout aside, could well miss out on the title and promotion.

So it’s in the hands of Whitland 3rds, who on 233 points host Pembroke Dock 2nds. A win and they’re champions.

Kilgetty are on 225 points though and a win, plus a minimum of four bonus points, will secure promotion. That scenario could also yield them silverware if the Borderers slip up.

Now, if Whitland do finish top two, and their 2nd team is relegated from Division Three, they won't go up and only one will come down from Division Four. Simple, hey?

Good luck everyone.
