Division 3: Goodwick United 2nds 0-1 Milford Athletic

A stunning strike from veteran Michael Cooper ensured Milford Athletic took advantage of Monkton 2nds not playing by closing the gap on the leaders leaders.

Following this win over Goodwick 2nds at Phoenix Park, Paul Howard's side now have 18 points from 18, just three behind The Swifts but with a game in hand.

A very scrappy first half was lit up by Cooper's strike, as he hammered a 25 yard shot that flew past home keeper Kieran O'Connor.

Goodwick had a chance to level when striker Steven Evans crashed a shot against he bar and the rebound fell to Mike Williams - but he could only put his shot straight at Athletic keeper Jonathan Pawlett.

The second half was also tight but the visitors had the chance to seal it when Callum Stannett was fouled in the area, but Ben Fairbairn saw his spot kick saved by O'Connor.

Athletic held on though, to the satisfaction of manager Howard.

"We played really well in the first half," he said.

"They came back into it second half but we defended well and got a clean sheet and I'm really pleased for the boys."
