Ammanford 0

Haverfordwest County 1

Sean Pemberton’s first half goal sent Haverfordwest County two points clear at the top of the table.

Pemberton got on the end of a Ben Fawcett corner; the Bluebirds’ skipper took a touch before volleying through a crowded area for the defining goal.

This was a highly entertaining top end of the table tussle at the Recreation Ground with the home fans creating a terrific atmosphere.

Marcus Griffiths blazed an early chance for the visitors over the crossbar, after being set-up down the left by veteran Nicky Palmer and Harri Rowe.

Early in the game the Black and Whites lost the influential services of centre back Ben Soal with a leg injury, and he was replaced by Nicholas Glendon.

Former Bluebird Lee Trundle struck a wicked left footed shot from an acute angle which crashed against Kyle Stuart’s crossbar.

In the 41st minute Pemberton struck as the visitors led 1-0 at half time.

Five minutes after the break, Trundle worked his trickery with an audacious overheard cross, and Stuart spread himself as he pulled off a brilliant point blank save to incredibly deny Craig Frater with a powerful six-yard header.

The visitors continued to press forward as Euros Griffiths and Gavin Jones both fired shots wide as the defiant visitors back three of Scott Tancock, Pemberton the immaculate Sam Rodon comfortably dealt with everything.

Miles John replaced Marcus Griffiths as the visitors played with just the lively Fawcett up front.

John broke clear on the right and cut inside before firing a low drive agonisingly wide of Craig Morris’ far post.

Both sides made further changes as Bruno Forkou and Ricky Martin came on for the Black and Whites and as the visitors ran down the clock, Jack Wilson replaced the industrious Fawcett, and Jake Merry came on in injury time for ever improving young left-wing back Harri Rowe.

“I’m delighted we bounced back after Saturday’s disappointing defeat last Saturday,” said Haverfordwest County manager Wayne Jones.

“We put bodies on the line tonight and attacked second balls. It’s our best defensive display so far this season.”
