Senior Cup quarter final: Fishguard Sports v Goodwick United (abandoned after 37 minutes)

It's been 17 years since Fishguard Sports and Goodwick United was an all Division 1 affair - and at this rate it will be another 17 before they actually square off as two top tier sides.

Twice this season the sides had been set to meet in the league at Tregroes only for the weather to scupper matters, and this cup clash also seemed in doubt all week due to heavy rain.

But after a dry morning, referee Charles Davies passed the ground fit to play after inspection - only for the official himself to pick up an injury 37 minutes in. With Davies clearly unable to move properly, and no other official available to take over, there was little option left but to abandon matters.

Goodwick's handy lead:

It was perhaps the visitors left more frustrated after they had taken the lead 27 minutes in - and did so in strange circumstances.

A long throw from Steff Hayes was nodded goalwards by Scott Delaney, only for former Goodwick player Patrick Hughes to handle the ball on the line. Jordan Thomas then turned in the loose ball and referee Davies awarded the goal as opposed to a penalty - and a certain red for Hughes became yellow.

Prior to that the Phoenix Boys had edged matters on a surface that was beginning to cut up. Jordan Griffiths had dragged a shot across goal and Rhys Dalling had been thwarted when through on goal by Fishguard keeper Dean Hopson.

Griffiths would later have a goal ruled out for offside.

Fishguard did have flashes of pressure with Danny Morgan volleying just wide from 20 yards and Lewis Banks curling a long range shot over - but all proved fruitless with the local rivals now having to go again.
