The Long Course Weekend scheduled to take place in Tenby in July has been cancelled for 2020.
Organisers e-mailed all entrants today with the following statement: "We’re writing to regrettably notify you that in view of the recent requirements and guidance issued by the government in respect of the Coronavirus pandemic, that we have no alternative other than to cancel the LCW Wales XI this year.
"Whilst we are mindful that a significant number of other sporting events have already been cancelled this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it has not made this decision any easier for us. We are devastated having invested a significant amount of time, money and resource into planning the LCW, and many of you will undoubtedly have been training hard and, like us, were looking forward to the event."
Under current Government guidelines, mass gatherings are prohibited and are likely to remain so for some considerable time - which made the concept of the event going ahead almost impossible.
Athletes have been told they will receive a 50% refund of their entry fee and a 100% refund on pre-ordered merchandise. They will also receive a 50% discount off Long Course Weekend events scheduled to be held in Holland, Belgium and Australia later this year, as well as individual Priority entry to LCW Wales 2021.
However, that policy has not gone down well, with many entrants taking to social media to voice their displeasure and not being offered a full refund or an option to defer until 2021.
Organisers also clarified as to why they had not tried to re-arrange the event for later in the year.
"The complete uncertainty of local community and market conditions in the coming months has left stakeholders in a position where a guaranteed date is not possible," they said.
