Haverfordwest Cricket Club finished a steady season in mid-table, and club captain Martin John was again at the heart of the side.

He's selected the club's best squad of the last 20 years for Telegraph Sport, but as modestly left his own name off the list.

And there's a fair few 'dual-sportsmen' in here that followers of Pembrokeshire cricket will recognise too.

GOALKEEPER - ADAM JAMES

A keeper that barely maes a mistake and absolutely solid. When you heard him calling you would certainly move out the way!

RIGHT BACK - MATTHEW THOMAS (Tweedy)

I didn’t play alongside him for long as he was away a lot, but a very steady and composed player. He would always listen and hardly put a foot wrong.

CENTRE BACK - JOSH WILMOT

At six foot plus, he was a big player to have in the team. He had great relationships with centre back partners and was always very physical and loved a challenge. A lot of strikers hated playing against him, that’s for sure.

CENTRE BACK - JAMIE CATO

Unlike Wilmot he certainly isn’t six foot, but for a guy that is short he made the centre back role look easy like a Sunday morning. I have never seen a man who could out jump anybody in the air like he did, and was often on the score sheet.

LEFT BACK - TIM MOSS

What a fantastic full back, very tenacious! He would always be biting at the wingers ankles. He was always very reliable in training and at games would put 100 % in.

RIGHT MIDFIELD - RORY BLAKE

A young Rory Blake was a handful to say the least but he soon matured into an excellent player. He could dribble past players as if they weren’t there, he set up plenty of assists and chipped in with the scoring most games. We often found our team players pulling Rory away from squabbles on and off the pitch - we put it down to him using a little psychology getting inside their heads.

CENTRE MIDFIELD - DAVID LEE RODERICK

As ex-British Army, he was obviously well drilled, very disciplined and extremely fit. He had fantastic leadership and all the boys fed off his energy and skills. But just like me, he was always finding himself on the floor with yet another injury!

CENTRE MIDFIELD - CRAIG BEACH

He captained the side to a memorable double that I’m sure everyone at the club will never forget. He ran the midfield very well and was always calm, cool and collective. A player you would always want in the starting line up.

LEFT MIDFIELD - PAUL JENKINS

I was fortunate enough to have a lot of playing time with Jenks in my footballing career. He was an absolute engine, giving 100% throughout every game. He was very skilful with a left foot that would scare any opponent. Just like Rory he would always find himself in a scrap and collecting a yellow.

STRIKER - NATHAN KIRKHOUSE

Nathan has it all - pace, power, agility and everything an excellent player needs. He did very well in his footballing career by going on to play at Newcastle Emlyn. He loved winding up the opposition to his advantage and not long after that he would often score a goal - winding them up further. A brilliant character to have in the dressing room.

STRIKER - DANNY POTTER

I had a couple of years playing in the same team as Danny- a very good player with the ball at his feet, strong in holding off defenders. He was also deadly in front of a goal. I hear it is not just football he is good at - he is also quite handy with a cricket bat

SUBSTITUTES

CHRIS PHILLIPS

Chris is a brilliant clubman. The only reason he isn’t in my starting XI is that I have no idea what his best position is - you could always rely on putting him anywhere on the field with confidence. Though he spent more time at the bar of the club, he would undoubtedly turn up every Saturday and smash out a good game.

JAMIE JENKINS

Jamie was a very classy player who often went unnoticed or under appreciated for what he did for the team. Unfortunately, he had an horrific injury which sadly cut his time playing and only then I knew what a big loss he was for the team. He was a brilliant reader of the game and although he wasn’t the type of player to run box to box - he never needed to.

DAI DAVIES (DAPPER)

I don’t think I actually played alongside Dapper at the cricket club but I know a lot about him and people still talk about his time here. He could get into most Division 1 teams, if not all of them. He is energetic, physical and comes across as a brilliant leader.

MANAGER - MIKE SMITH

Through the years Mike was Haverfordwest CC through and through, he has done so much for the club and not just the football side. He had a lot of passion for making the pitches look as immaculate as possible for us to play on. Mike gave me my chance at playing outfield, which I always wanted, and I am forever thankful for that because I have never loved the game so much.
