NEWPORT RFC have added firepower to their back line in preparation for when they are given the go-ahead to return to action in the Premiership.

The Black and Ambers have been known for their expansive approach in recent seasons and that looks likely to continue after bringing in three more options in the three-quarters.

Wing Mathew Powell, centre Cameron Lewis and full-back George Gladding have signed up for Rodney Parade ahead of the coming campaign.

Powell heads to Newport after being a firm favourite at Cross Keys while Lewis has been a regular in the World Rugby Sevens Series with Wales.

Gladding, who can also play on the wing, has earned the step up by impressing for Cardiff Met in the Championship.

Head coach Ty Morris, who has brought in former Newport fly-half James Dixon to be in charge of the backs, is pleased to have bolstered the squad.

South Wales Argus:

“All through my coaching career I have witnessed a lot of my teams lose thanks to Mathew’s ability to score tries,” said Morris.

“He knows exactly where the try line is. He is a player that is very difficult to stop when in full flow.

“He was formidable when at Cross Keys and was progressing well before moving on to play sevens for Wales and then joining Cardiff.

“He sustained a nasty injury that restricted his game time last season but is now back and fighting fit. We are really looking forward to seeing him scoring tries at Rodney Parade this season.

“Cameron Lewis has featured at the top level through all his age grades and young career.

“He has featured at regional level in the Celtic Cup, whilst in the Premiership he played a number of games in the midfield for both Pontypridd and Cardiff.

South Wales Argus:

“Cameron was a member of the 2017 Wales U20 squad, and later that year received his first sevens cap in Dubai. Since then he has been a mainstay.

“We are looking forward to seeing Cameron and the skills he has developed while playing sevens. His pace and strong running will add to an already strong midfield this season.

“We have been watching George play for some time and have been really impressed with his strong kicking game and running skills from either fullback or out on the wing.

“He had an excellent season with Cardiff Met and we are hoping that he can transfer those impressive skills he displayed to the Premiership in the new season. We think he can make a big impact.”

Newport previously announced the signings of scrum-half Rhys Downes and hooker Will Griffiths.

All Premiership clubs are waiting for the go-ahead from the Welsh Rugby Union to resume full training.

A pre-season period will then be needed to get players up to speed for a shortened 2020/21.

Newport haven't played since beating Ponty at Sardis Road at the end of February while their last fixture on home soil was a win against Swansea at the start of that month.
