MICHAEL Flynn isn’t concerned by his Newport County AFC making the club’s best start to an EFL campaign, stressing it’s early days for his League Two pace-setters.

The Exiles beat Bradford City 3-0 at Valley Parade to move up to 19 points from eight games, leapfrogging Cambridge United after they were held by Bolton Wanderers.

Mickey Demetriou scored in the first minute, Padraig Amond slotted for a 2-0 lead at the break and Matty Dolan struck home a penalty in injury time.

County have not only enjoyed an impressive run in the Carabao Cup but have made their strongest start to a league campaign.

“What I would rather now is the best finish in the club’s history,” said Flynn. “It’s just a start and there is a long way to go with 38 games left.

“I am not getting carried away at all. We dust ourselves down, we are back in Monday and have a tough game against Colchester on Tuesday.

South Wales Argus:

“We’ve just had a fantastic week when we picked up six points away from home [County won 1-0 at Stevenage on Tuesday]. I can’t remember the last time that we did that.

“I know we have had four points before but this is six points and two clean sheets. It’s a massive, massive return and if we can turn the next couple of home games into results as well then we will be a good position.”

County have kept three clean sheets on the spin after shutting out Tranmere, Stevenage and Bradford.

“They are defending with their lives when they need to and know their roles and responsibilities,” said Flynn.

“Bradford were forcing the issues, we knew that they would, but we just had to stay calm, not make any mistakes and counter them, which we did.”

South Wales Argus:

“It was a fantastic win against a team with some very good players,” continued Flynn, a former Bradford player. “They had a lot of possession in the second half but didn’t really hurt us.

“We played the counter-attack game well; it’s always a tough one when leading 2-0 at half-time about how to approach it.

“I was confident we could defend solidly and take our chances if they came. To be honest we should have scored a couple more in the second half.

“It’s a big, big win. I know that they are a good team, so it makes the win even better.”

The only disappointment of the afternoon was a hamstring injury suffered by Saikou Janneh as he chased a clearance from goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

County will assess the damage in the coming days.
