LAWRENNY’S weekend might have ended phenomenally but it didn’t start that way with what should have been a less tricky encounter than ensued against eighth placed St Ishmaels on Saturday.
Lawrenny won the toss and put St Ishmaels into bat, the Tish making a big time total of 200 for 7.
Lawrenny lost eight wickets in chasing down their target, finishing on 201 for 8.
Before the match, 95 points separated the Tish, all the way in ninth, and title chasing Lawrenny, first.
Things seemed to be going the way of form with St Ishmaels making just seven runs in the opening seven overs.
However this didn’t seem to faze the Tish, who took maximum batting points remaining at the wicket for the entirety of their innings – best bowling figures for Lawrenny coming from Rob Williams, Harry Thomas and Kurtis Marsh who all took two wickets each.
Peter Bradshaw (54), Philip Cockburn (43), and Jonathan Pawlett (32 not out) all put in solid scores for St Ishmaels.
When Lawrenny came to the wicket, other than the ever-dependable Kurtis Marsh (52), their batting line-up didn’t hit first gear with good, if not game shattering scores of 11 (Harry Thomas), (30) James Phillips, 22 (Joe Kidney) and 21 Tom Cole.
Where a game shattering score did come was in the match between Narberth and Carew.
Shaun Whitfield made 119 as the Rooks beat Narberth by 6 wickets, Narberth making 214-9 and Carew 218-4.
In the game that shred the nails for bite marks this weekend, Cresselly, fresh off their first win in the league in five, just beat Haverfordwest by 7 runs.
Haverfordwest won the toss and put Cresselly into bat, the Doves making 199-7 – Dan Sutton, as ever, red hot with the bat, making his half-century (55).
When Haverfordwest came to the crease they made 192 for 9.
The Town needed 11 runs in the last over but made just four, largely down to the astute bowling of 15-year-old Charlie Arthur who demonstrated experience beyond his years.
First division results: Narberth (214-9) lost to Carew (218-4) by 6 wickets; Haverfordwest (192-9) lost to Cresselly (199-7) by 7 runs; St Ishmaels (200-7) lost to Lawrenny (201-8) by 2 wickets; Neyland (200-8) beat Saundersfoot (108ao) by 92 runs; Llechryd (180ao) beat Whitland (160-9) by 20 runs
In division two, Kilgetty’s Thomas Lewis put in one of the performances of the round making 101 not out as Kilgetty recorded a vital victory in the bottom of the table clash between themselves and Haverfordwest Seconds.
Kilgetty beat Haverfordwest by 106 runs, batting first and making 244-4 before Haverfordwest were bowled out for 138.
Toby Poole (69), Richard Cope (42), and Robert Beynon (3-38) were the other scores of the match.
The result was hard on the performance of Haverfordwest’s Nigel Morgan who made 51 and took a wicket.
The victory for Kilgetty gives them some hope of avoiding relegation, being 32 points behind seventh placed Hook with three games remaining.
In the race for the division two title Lllangwm and Pembroke Dock both won.
Llangwm (208-2) beat Herbrandston (206-7) by eight wickets while Pembroke Dock (208 all out) beat Lamphey (109 all out) by 99 runs.
Jake Griffiths made 86 for Pembroke Dock and Nick Daley took 3 for 22.
Llangwm had a more all-round batting display with Steven Mills making 61 (as well as taking four wickets), Richard Brock making 48 not out, and Luke Brock 58 not out.
Burton are also in the running after another good victory over Pembroke by 43 runs.
The boys on the banks of the Cleddau are just three points behind The Dock who are 21 points behind Llangwm in first.
