Newport hosted the much anticipated opening regatta of the Welsh Sea Rowing Association 2009 calendar.

The hard training and dedication procured a record number of crews.

Among the usual suspects and big hitters were Aberdyfi, Mochras, Aberystwyth, Llangwm, Llanion, Pembrokeshire Yacht Club, Llangrannog, New Quay, Cardigan, Fishguard and Neyland.

Mochras, Llangwm and Aberyswyth were the contenders for the men’s southern title.

It was all to be decided at the race in Aberystwyth, with Llangwm, Mochras and Aberystwyth going head to head one last time.

There had to be a winner and in the end it was Mochras who proved the more worthy. In the women’s category, a real catfight of a competition was also taking place, and no less hard fought than the men.

Showing real guile and true finesse, Llangwm A won the southern ladies title.

Llangwm’s impressive record haul continued as Brokebacks won the Southern mixed league trophy.
