MAGNIFICENT boxing sensation Mickey Mcdonagh’s incredible form just gets better and better, after winning in Bosnia in September, the lightweight followed up by claiming another top notch title in Finland in November.
The 21-year-old, excelled representing Wales in a European competition held at the Tammer Tournament, Pyyniken Sports Hall, Tampere, Finland.
The Pembroke Dock man won gold and was also awarded with the coveted ‘boxer of the tournament’ trophy, emulating what he achieved in Bosnia, on the way he defeated some of the finest European opponents for good measure.
In the 60kg class quarter final - McDonagh oozed class to fend off the challenge of Germany’s Nenad Stancic, in the semi-final the Merlins Bridge protégé picked-up a comfortable victory over host nation Finland’s Arslan Khatajev.
In the final, George Bates (Ireland) had no answer to Mcdonagh’s class, the Welshman gaining an easy win and the title.
This latest success represents another major step forward for Mcdonagh, who has already qualified to represent Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia, next April.
Unsurprisingly, his longer term goal is to represent Team GB at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Mcdonagh has spent the past decade training at Merlins Bridge under the guidance of the club’s head coach, Graham Brockway.
He has already represented his country at schoolboy, junior, and senior level, and regularly trains with the national and GB elite squads.
