AARON Wainwright has been tipped for a place on the British and Irish Lions tour by a man who scored last time out in South Africa, but the Dragons back rower admits a spot is “a bit of a far reach”.

Warren Gatland will name his 36-man squad to face the Springboks tomorrow afternoon. The skipper will be announced at 12.09pm and then his 35 teammates will be unveiled at 12.28pm.

It will be a surprise if the Dragons have a representative after hooker Elliot Dee and tighthead Leon Brown were impact subs for Wales in the Six Nations while Ross Moriarty missed out through injury and Wainwright featured just twice.

However, Ugo Monye believes that the 23-year-old from Bassaleg, who can play across the back row, could make an impact against South Africa.

Picking his squad on the BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast, the former England winger plumped for Wainwright ahead of his Wales teammate Josh Navidi.

Western Telegraph:

“I think Wainwright has a bit of X-factor,” said Monye, who scored in the third Test win in 2009 after missing a pair of chances in the first.

“He could be world class. I like his match-up with Pieter-Steph du Toit and he brings extra height and a jumping option in the line-out as well.

“I’ve looked for a different type of player for balance and different ways of operating.”

While Monye believes Wainwright is in the mix, the man himself is looking to play in a different red jersey this summer.

After missing out on the Wales 23 for the Six Nations finale against France, when Wayne Pivac opted for James Botham as back-up for Josh Navidi, Justin Tipuric and Taulupe Faletau, Wainwright is looking to add to his 29 caps.

“Possibly before the Six Nations but it’s a bit of a far reach now,” he said on his Lions hopes. “I will concentrate on the Dragons and hopefully put my hand up for the summer tour.”

Wales were meant to face Argentina and Uruguay in South America but are now looking at other options for Tests.
