A police spokesman said: "The sad passing of PC Jenkins at Pill Police Station was not related to a police incident.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Jeff Cuthbert, the police and crime commissioner for Gwent, added his condolences.

Gwent Police's chief constable Julian Williams has said that the force lost a police officer yesterday, saying that his thoughts are with the family.

A spokesman for the Welsh ambulance services said they attended to a "medical emergency" in Canal Terrace, by Bolt Street, at 4.20pm.

He said: "We attended, an air ambulance was deployed as well."

UPDATE: 6.25pm 

The road has just reopened but there is still a police presence. The helicopter remains in the car park.

Gwent Police have been contacted for comment.

There is a Great Western Air Ambulance helicopter parked in the Jewson grounds.

Bobielea Dixon, who is visiting her uncle who lives in the street, said the helicopter arrived about half an hour ago, then an ambulance and then the police cars arrived.

She said they saw paramedics getting off the helicopter and ran towards the police station at the bottom of the street. 

"We don't know what is happening," she said.

Police are blocking Bolt Street, with one car by Duke Street and another one where the street joins Enterprise Way. 

There are two community support officers.

THERE are reports of an incident in Bolt Street, in the Pill area of Newport.

We understand police have blocked the road and that a helicopter was hovering over the area.
