Gelli Dywyll was established by the historian PC Bartram as being the home of Hywel ab Owain of Llanbryn- mair, born around 1400, in whose honour a poem was dedicated by a well-known travelling poet of the time named Guto'r Glyn. The poem talks of Hywel's prowess as a soldier, musician, lawyer and athlete. Gelli Dywyll was a key site for pioneer woman geologist Ethel Wood who studied the rocks the dingle in the early 1900s, found fossils dating back 425 million years and named the type-rock of the area as the Gelli Shales.
