HAVERFORDWEST was awash with colour on Saturday, as pirates and mermaids paraded through the town for the second annual Walking Carnival.

Pembroke Dock marching band Samba Doc led the 70-strong procession through the streets, stopping for a lively performance on Castle Square, before heading back to the Riverside for fun, games and more music.

Seileaean School of Irish Dancing performed a toe-tapping routine, and percussion ensemble Homemade invited the audience to join their performance by banging pots and pans to create a unique carnival song.

There was plenty to see and do, with a big bouncy slide, amusements and tasty snacks to keep cool in the hot weather.

Deputy Mayor Roy Thomas and Sherriff Barbara Morgan had the important job of choosing winners of the fancy dress costume, with prizes going to the Fishguard Arms pub, Free-Leigh Blything, and father and son duo Barry and Aled Dulson.

Carnival organiser Richard Blacklaw-Jones said: “Having the carnival in the town centre made a big difference, it increased visibility and made people want to get involved."

He added that he hoped the carnival would be even bigger and better next year, and encouraged anyone wanting to help to visit the Haverfordwest At Its Best page on Facebook.

The walking carnival was organised with help from Haverfordwest Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, Cleddau Press, and Roland Keevil of Riverside Shopping.
