A GROUP of trail blazing young farmers have raised £1,400 for the Alzheimer’s Society in Pembrokeshire, driving a banger from Pembroke to Barcelona.

Jonathan Palmer, from Pembroke, Matthew Palmer, from Cosheston, Wayne Shanklin, from Cosheston, and former Cosheston man Ross Brown took part in the three-day Barcelona Banger race, which requires entrants to drive a car worth no more than £250.

They travelled from Pembroke to Calais, through Northern France, to Tours, Toulouse and over the Pyrenees, via Andorra, to Barcelona, staying in hotels with other competitors along the way.

“We were in a car that cost less than £250 I thought we were going to break down, but we didn’t break down once,” Jonathan said.

“There were long days in the cars, but all the sites were amazing.

“The highlight was driving along the snow-capped Andorra mountains, which was really, really picturesque.”

The group came seventh overall for best car, taking inspiration for the design from their young farming backgrounds.

The object of the race is to raise as much money for charity, as well as enjoying an adventure of a lifetime.

Special thanks go to everyone who helped in their fundraising efforts.
