PLANS to demolish a Penally nightclub and build 11 houses in its place have been unanimously approved.
The outline application, which sought permission to tear down DJs Night Club and the Shangri La Flats, was discussed by the County Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, October 6.
The proposed 11 houses would be a mixture of detached, semi-detached and terraced properties, together with two points of access for vehicles.
Planning officers recommended approval despite the scheme being contrary to the Development Plan, but said "the removal of an un-neighbourly form of development from a residential area was sufficient to justify a departure."
The approval is subject to a section 106 agreement and other conditions.
No objections were received during the statutory consultation period, although concerns about sewage disposal, mains water pressure, road safety and the disposal of demolition waste were raised.
Speaking during the member debate, Councillor Brian Hall said: “I’m delighted to see no objection from Penally Community Council.
“When we went to the site visit for the tourist units/log cabins next door, I thought they were the best behaved opposition that I’ve ever encountered in the time I’ve been involved in planning.
“They had banners, they spoke, but there was no abuse and no shouting.
“They’re obviously delighted with this application which is why they haven’t objected.”
Addressing drainage concerns, Cllr Hall added: “I understand there were some concerns with sewerage, but I would say on Friday and Saturday nights, there may well have been a couple of thousand people in the nightclub, where there would have been a lot more sewerage than 11 properties.”
