IMPROVEMENT works are due to start on Glasfryn Road in St Davids this week.

The two phase scheme - costing around £750,000 - is being carried out by Pembrokeshire County Council and funded by the Welsh Government.

Currently almost all of Glasfryn Road is single-track with limited passing places. It is considered a substandard link between the A487 to Fishguard and the A487 to Haverfordwest.

The road also serves as access for St Davids Assemblies and for local residents.

The project, which is dependent on continued Welsh Government funding, involves the upgrade of the 650 metre long route to make it a standard two lane road.

There will be a new roundabout at its southern end junction with the A487 Haverfordwest road and a new shared use path.

The layout also includes facilities for pedestrians and cyclists with improved active travel access for employment at the nearby industrial site, local schools, leisure centre and residential areas.

As well as attracting through traffic, the new road will alleviate congestion in the centre of St Davids which occurs mostly in the holidays.

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman confirmed that the scheme is not connected to any proposed housing project in the area.

Glasfryn Road will be closed to traffic during parts of the construction phase, which is expected to last 15 months. Diversions will be in place. Pedestrian access will be maintained together with vehicular access to property located outside of the work area.
