Mrs G M Phillips

Fishguard

MRS Gwyneth Megan Phillips of Fishguard passed away peacefully on May 8 at the age of 96, having spent the last year living in Haverfordwest with her daughter, and cared for by her extended family, who all affectionately knew her as ‘Nanny’.

The family are extremely grateful for the help and support she received from carers who attended in the last few months.

Daughter of George and Margaret Davies, she was born in St Nicholas in 1920, the second of five daughters.

She and her sisters, Dilys, Ethel and Nancy were diagnosed with diphtheria when she was just eight years old, and sadly lost her two younger sisters following the disease. Dilys left to go into service while Megan stayed at home to care for her young sister, Maureen.

Her caring nature gave her the determination to go nursing, but was prevented from doing so because of the family farm commitments. After she was married in 1941, she lived in Goodwick and had two children, Gareth and Ann. There she met her dear friend Margaret, her next door neighbour and they remained friends to this day. She later returned to St Nicholas with the family to continue farming.

Many will remember Megan running Hamilton Stores Grocery shop in Fishguard, which she purchased in the 1960s, and when she eventually retired, she went on to run a very successful Bed and Breakfast at The Haven in Sladeway. Her cooked breakfast and freshly baked bread were renowned by many visitors who returned to stay with her.

Her travels abroad took her around the world to see many places including Russia, Singapore, New York and Oberammergau.

In her late 70’s she retired for a second time and lived in Heol Glyndwr where she continued to bake for family and friends who visited and supported her independence up until last year.

The funeral service was held at the Chapel of Rest in Fishguard on May 17. It was officiated by Rev Carl Williams, who was her minister for many years at Hermon Chapel.

The readings were by Rev John Roberts and her great granddaughter, Niamh, and prayers were also said by Fr Owen McGreal. The hymns were both written by her great uncle William Lewis, Abermawr.

The bearers Gareth Phillips (son), Alan Phillips and Stephen Donovan (grandsons), Idris Thomas (nephew), Bill Donoavn (son-in-law), Christopher Rees (great nephew).

She leaves to mourn her son Gareth and wife Rosemary and daughter Ann and husband Bill, also her two sisters, Dilys and Maureen and her husband Victor. She leaves six grandchildren Lynne, Claire, Stephen, Lorraine, Hayley and Alan and spouses and 12 great grandchildren.

She was buried at Llangloffan cemetery.
