THE vital work of Haverfordwest on-call firefighters has been hailed as “outstanding” after crew members picked up awards for their service.

Their commitment was recently recognised at a ceremony as Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service seeks to hire new recruits in Milford Haven.

Watch manager Keith Jenkins praised the dedication of his colleagues.

“This is a fantastic achievement by our firefighters,” he said.

“They have served their communities within Pembrokeshire for over a decade, committing cover from 90 to 120 hours a week on top of their main occupation. Their commitment is outstanding.”

Others at Haverfordwest Fire Station have completed over 20 years’ service.

Watch Manager Mark Joel has 28 years to his name, watch manager Keith Jenkins celebrates 30 years, while crew manager Gerwyn Howells marks 35 years with the service.

Gerwyn served as a whole-time watch manager and station liaison officer before retiring after 30 years’ service and now works as an on-call manager.

He was presented with a Long Service Medal during a drill night at the station by WM Mark Joel.

The fire service is currently running a recruitment campaign for on-call firefighters at Milford Haven Station.

On-call firefighters often have a career outside the fire service. They are called out on average two or three times per week for a couple of hours.

The firefighter needs to live within ten minutes of a station.

Pembrokeshire response manager Anthony Evans said: “The Fire and Rescue Service serves everybody in Pembrokeshire, whether you live, work or just visiting our county.

“Therefore, we welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds within our county.

“So, if you are reasonably fit and healthy, live within ten minutes of your local fire station and would like to serve your community – we would like to hear from you.”
