HAVERFORDWEST-based Green Acres Animal Rescue, battling to save a desperately ill little dog, is calling for prayers and support to save him.

On Monday, September 3, Green Acres Animal Rescue Manager Mikey Lawlor heard about a poorly Doberman pup in need of treatment.

That evening, Mikey said: “After a quick chat it was decided it best he came in to Rescue and saw our vets immediately.

“He was signed over to us to get the veterinary care he needed to try and save him. When taken to our vets Remus was very dehydrated and obvious gastrointestinal problems so he was hospitalised and put on a drip.

“Huge thank you to Fenton Vets for a speedy and excellent service; I’ve christened him Remus and he’s now on a heat pad and a drip and we await blood results.

“Keep Remus in your thoughts and prayers.

“We have to get him well that’s all that matters, now no sleep ‘til I hear if he’s OK or not.”

Green Acres covered the costs of 10-week-old Remus’s veterinary bills, which, to date are £2,500.

Mikey said: “He had an abdominal scan which revealed he had some thickening of the intestine and our vets suspected intussusception of the bowel. Emergency surgery was needed but our vets feared it may be too late, and gave a very guarded prognosis.

“Remus deserves a chance. After all he has his whole life ahead of him!

“So surgery went ahead and our vets removed over a metre of his intestines. The surgery was successful and went as well as it could be expected but he is still not out of the woods.”

Sadly, Remus’s condition became more touch-and-go.

By the next morning, Mikey posted on Facebook: “Angels if I’ve ever needed a miracle it’s now. The vets have called it’s not looking good.

“Remus has two interceptions one in small intestine one at the colon. To save him they’ll have to remove one metre of intestine. I’ve told them to try but they’re not hopeful.

“I can’t let him go without at least trying; please pray for him.”

Later that day there was better news.

Mikey said: “Just been to see Remus and he’s sleeping it off. The vets are pleased with how the operation went but we cannot forget this a huge operation, and especially as he has no fat reserves and is so young. He’s still a very, very poorly pup.

“Miracles and prayers still needed, the next 48 hours are vital. Stay with us lad, your whole life awaits.”

He later added: “Remus has a wonderful foster home available just a few minutes from the vets for when he can be discharged. We pray this will be in a couple of days.

“I refuse to give up on an animal because of a financial implication, so the last thing I say to the vet each time is ‘whatever he needs he will have,’ and so far it’s working.

“Am I sure he will survive? Honestly? No, I’m not, but there’s one thing I can be sure of and that’s he had a much better chance than he did if we’d have done nothing.

“Remus’s bill stands at £2,500 so far, so I am asking all my wonderful animal-loving friends to donate just a couple of pounds.

“It would be a huge help, and his treatment will be ongoing for some time, so will mean we can keep giving him the absolute best.”

Mikey said: “Thank you to those already donated and thank you for your kind words, prayers and wishes.

“I don’t want to tempt fate and he’s really not out of the woods but Remus is definitely looking brighter. He’s shown some interest in a tiny amount of food and is enjoying all the fuss.

“I cannot thank Fenton Vets enough for their commitment and care of Remus, I know I drive them mad at times but they’re simply the best vets ever.”

Little Remus's battle continues, but Mikey is hopeful he'll be okay.

Speaking on Thursday, Mikey said: "Remus update: just spent some time with him and he’s still doing ok, the drip has been taken out and, all being well, his feeding tube will come out tomorrow."

Western Telegraph:

"He is a little quieter this afternoon but still showing healthy interest in his food. I really can’t wait till we are a week post-op."

"Keep fighting mate!"
